I have been attempting to jailbreak and unlock two 1st generation iPhone 3G phones.
Both were on firmware 4.2.1 (8C148) and baseband 15.14.02. I discovered that in order to unlock them, I would need to upgrade the baseband to iPad 16.5.00, from which point there is 'no return'.
I used Redsn0w to upgrade the first device and it worked fine. I was then able to use Cydia and Ultrasn0w to unlock it and use my new sim card. It is totally working as intended.
So I tried to repeat the exact same process on the second device.
The jailbreak seemed to work, but then when it came to reboot, it got stuck on the Apple logo. I tried to reboot using Redsn0w and all I got was a pineapple logo instead of the apple logo.
I have tried various solutions to solve this problem ever since, using Redsn0w, Pwnage, TinyUmbrella, iTunes and different .ispw files (4.2.1, custom, and ipad 16.5.0).
I got to the point where I got all the way through the iTunes restore process (via pointing it towards the correct .ispw file) until I get one of two error messages:
1st one is when I use the 4.2.1 ISPW file. It gives me the following error:
"The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015)."
2nd one is when I use the custom ISPW files created with Pwnage. I get an error 1600/1604 that mentions something about USB problems.
Am I right in trying to restore the iPhone before re-attempting the jailbreak? How do I get past these error messages? Is there a way of just using Redsn0w to fix this?
NB This device was jailbroken and unlocked once before, from a different version. It was then mistakenly restored, updated, and the unlock was lost and I had to put in a sim card from the original carrier (O2) in order to re-activate it.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated!
Redsn0w 0.9.6rc18 for jailbreaking and ipadding a 3g on 4.2.1
once its on 6.15 you have to use a custom ipsw, usually made by wonage or sn0wbreeze
