How to fix some mysterious problems.

I have been attempting to jailbreak and unlock two 1st generation iPhone 3G phones.

Both were on firmware 4.2.1 (8C148) and baseband 15.14.02. I discovered that in order to unlock them, I would need to upgrade the baseband to iPad 16.5.00, from which point there is 'no return'.

I used Redsn0w to upgrade the first device and it worked fine. I was then able to use Cydia and Ultrasn0w to unlock it and use my new sim card. It is totally working as intended.

So I tried to repeat the exact same process on the second device.

The jailbreak seemed to work, but then when it came to reboot, it got stuck on the Apple logo. I tried to reboot using Redsn0w and all I got was a pineapple logo instead of the apple logo.

I have tried various solutions to solve this problem ever since, using Redsn0w, Pwnage, TinyUmbrella, iTunes and different .ispw files (4.2.1, custom, and ipad 16.5.0).

I got to the point where I got all the way through the iTunes restore process (via pointing it towards the correct .ispw file) until I get one of two error messages:

1st one is when I use the 4.2.1 ISPW file. It gives me the following error:

"The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1015)."

2nd one is when I use the custom ISPW files created with Pwnage. I get an error 1600/1604 that mentions something about USB problems.

Am I right in trying to restore the iPhone before re-attempting the jailbreak? How do I get past these error messages? Is there a way of just using Redsn0w to fix this?

NB This device was jailbroken and unlocked once before, from a different version. It was then mistakenly restored, updated, and the unlock was lost and I had to put in a sim card from the original carrier (O2) in order to re-activate it.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated!

Redsn0w 0.9.6rc18 for jailbreaking and ipadding a 3g on 4.2.1

once its on 6.15 you have to use a custom ipsw, usually made by wonage or sn0wbreeze

Thanks - how do I install the custom IPSW without getting either of the error messages I mentioned above, on iTunes?

use redsn0w to pwn dfu it. Redsn0w>extras>pwn dfu (if its in dfu now and after an error you MUST home+power for 10 seconds before attempting pwn dfu or you will be "dbl dfu" and error out again)

I tried this, several times, and it results in the iTunes Error 1015 (IPhone cannot be restored). The Restore process seems fine until it reaches the 'firmware' section, ie verifying firmware.

Do you know if I need to do anything with TinyUmbrella to get past this?

I have tried so many different programs and solutions to no success - I keep getting the iTunes 1015 error, and I can't seem to kick my iPhone 3G out of recovery mode.

Please please please, if anyone can help I would be really grateful.

you need to make a custom firmware. a NO_BB ipsw with redsn0w or a custom with sn0wbreeze

Thanks. I think I did that already in PwnageTool - I haven't tried making it in Redsn0w yet. (I then alt-clicked in iTunes to select the custom IPSW).

What do you mean by 'NO_BB'?

Also, is there a Mac version of Sn0wbreeze? The only one I can find on their site is a .exe file.
