Question

Hi, I want to jailbreak an iPhone 4 via a custom IPSW. But redsn0w fails to build a custom ISPW of this (iPhone3,1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore.ipsw) file with the error "Custom ISPW creation failed. cannot close compressed file in IPSW". PwnageTool fails with the error message: Wrong firmware chosen. Any help? Thanks in advance, Shaun.

Is the firmware file a .ipsw or .zip? If you have downloded with IE you will need to change it to .ipsw

It's .ispw-file, downloaded with a downloader ("speed download") from http://appldnld.apple.com/iPhone4/041-3309.20111109.64rtg/iPhone3,1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore.ipsw. Downloaded via Safari produced exactly the same error...

Compare your downloaded ipsw file size from here. if not the same, you have a corrupt ipsw download.
