How to fix some mysterious problems.

After a clean firmware restore I restored some data manually; the sms.db and the entire WhatsApp directory, which I backed up using a zip from iFile. With the sms.db I had the problem that the Message app crashed whenever I wanted to send a new SMS. This was because I didn't set the owner to mobile (was root). So I checked the WhatsApp folder and found some files in GUID/Library/Preferences which were with owner root. What are the correct permissions of all WhatsApp files and especially those in the mentioned folder?

(GUID for WhatsApp)

Files and .GlobalPreferences.plist.

As mentioned in the comments, I've removed the application and did a fresh install and the two files owned by root were still like that, so this seems to be normal. And even changing owner to mobile in iFile does not work; they remain owned by root. Problem solved.

Feel free to comment if you have these two files owned by mobile.

The mentioned folder has four plists with different owners on my device. What is this on yours? And if it's wrong on mine, I wonder why the rest is correct then.

(06 Mar '12, 01:29) http ♦ http's gravatar image

Mine are all owned by mobile. I'm not sure why ownership changes after copying off and back onto the device. I was wondering the same back in the SMS backup/restore thread. :/

(06 Mar '12, 02:09) iphpwn4 ♦ iphpwn4's gravatar image

Well, for the SMS, I deleted the file first. But for WhatsApp, I just copied the zip over the existing new installation. Maybe only the new files got the root owner that way. In the mentioned folder, these are the two files: and .GlobalPreferences.plist.

(06 Mar '12, 03:09) http ♦ http's gravatar image

Yeah maybe cause we're using root user to put files on the device. Those two files are owner = mobile on mine.

(06 Mar '12, 04:43) iphpwn4 ♦ iphpwn4's gravatar image

Hmm. I just completely removed and redownloaded the application (see comments for other answer) and those two files were owner by root after the clean install. Are you sure it's different for you?

(06 Mar '12, 05:17) http ♦ http's gravatar image

Just been randomly checking ownership with iFile and so far everything in my applications folder and subfolders is owned by mobile.

Maybe you need an SBSettings fix user dir permissions? I'm stumped.

@iphpwn4 PkgBackup used to have a problem where restoring preferences files using PkgBackup changed ownership to mobile. Did you use a backup/restore tool like PkgBackup to set up this device?

Off topic but am curious. Why the need to copy over WhatsApp messages/data? Data is stored at WhatsApp servers and you can view them on a newly restored device once logged in.

What part is stored on their server? Custom groups? Conversation history? All transferred media like movies? Am I totally wrong that this would get lost?

(06 Mar '12, 01:32) http ♦ http's gravatar image

Yep. All stored in WA server and restored once you log in. Even auto joins groups you were previously in.

(06 Mar '12, 01:46) justinred ♦ justinred's gravatar image

Ok, I'll try to delete and redownload the App and see how that goes.

(06 Mar '12, 03:06) http ♦ http's gravatar image

Does NOT work. Chat history and all media is lost after a clean re-install. But groups will get re-joined.

(06 Mar '12, 05:18) http ♦ http's gravatar image

Well I just checked my chat history in WhatsApp/settings/email chat history and everything is there including all media since the day I installed WhatsApp. Note I have done a 3 to 4 set up as new restores since then.

(06 Mar '12, 05:38) justinred ♦ justinred's gravatar image

Maybe we're not talking about the same. I meant a clean firmware restore, without restoring any data in iTunes. You can do the same by deleting the App and downloading it again. History will be away. The backup of the WhatsApp folder (zip) is 50MB. That can't be downloaded on the fly with a reinstallation.

Ahh. I think I figured out what I did. Though I do set up as new after a restore, I use appbackup to restore apple apps settings/data/saved games. I checked and WhatsApp is one of the apps it does save. Sorry for the confusion. :)
