How to fix some mysterious problems.

I've restored a million times, and this has never happened before; My iPhone 4 GSM isn't detecting my SIM. Note: I haven't had service in MONTHS, I've been getting away with using the SIM still though. It's T-Mobile.

Side-question, how come I don't have Facetime without a jailbreak tweak?

What is the model, version and modem firmware in settings/general/about? Do you rely on unlock like ultrasn0w or gevey?

I can't get that far into the phone; I'm stuck at the start-up screen because it won't detect my SIM card. I believe it's a gevey unlock, but I could very well be wrong.

Does it work with the SIM of the carrier it's locked to?

Run redsn0w 9.10b5c jailbreak, tick only install cydia, it will hactivate to bypass activation screen. If you restored using stock psw or by clicking restore in iTunes, you now have 4.11 modem firmware (baseband) which cannot be unlocked by gevey or ultrasn0w.

It didn't even come to mind that my phone's locked to T-Mobile, but that'd explain why my friends Sprint SIM didn't work.

Could it be that the SIM expired? (Do they do that?)

No SIM card, no use of my iPhone?

As I said, run redsn0w 9.10b5c jailbreak, tick only install cydia, it will hactivate to bypass activation screen. Then tell me the model, version and modem firmware in settings/general/about.

That's carrier: Zain Country: Kuwait. You will need one of their sims or contact them to see if they offer carrier unlocking

I live in Sacramento, Ca; That is seemingly impossible. I'm just glad I have access to my apps again. Thanks a bunch =3

afaik, all units with ae suffixes are factory unlocked. From your question "Note: I haven't had service in MONTHS, I've been getting away with using the SIM still though. It's T-Mobile." What do you mean by that? Have you tried inserting a different active sim? Some mideast country units have disabled facetime, facetime hactivator by iphoneislam hacks that.

The phone isn't originally mine; I traded an iPod Touch 2G for it months ago. The person I got it from found it on a bus, and at the time, it had service. The SIM card was working (Or at least was detected) up until yesterday. Now I can't use iMessage, but seeing has how I use 'TextFree' that shouldn't be TOO big of an issue. The bit about facetime makes a LOT of sense now that you mention it; I've been using that tweak for ages though =3 (Insanelyi?)

Toggle airplane mode, if persists, reinsert sim, try rubbing the contact side of SIM on denim to remove possible oxidation. FaceTime and iMessage will activate without jailbreak tweak on iOS 5 for T-Mobile_US, however phone must be activated with an official carrier (or original if not factory unlocked) sim prior to using T-Mobile_US even if factory unlocked.

Other possible causes (silly yes, but you never know):

  1. is your phone bill paid or do you have sufficient credit?

  2. did you update the baseband on a non factory unlocked phone?

  3. are you using gevey or ultrasn0w with incompatible baseband?

I traded an iPod Touch 2G for it months ago, and it had a working SIM card at the time. I've restored many times since then, and this is the only time I've had the problem. If your baseband updates automatically, probably; Is it 'non factory unlocked' I'm unsure.

Have you attempted the troubleshooting measures suggested as well as answer the 3 questions?
