Hello, This all started when I tried to install BBSettings in my iPhone4, running 5.0.1 JB. Loaded it into the notifications. I am not familiar with that program. The buttons were not working. So I rebooted my phone. I could not ever get the phone to restart. I decided to restore the phone with the latest Redsnow 0.9.10b4. At least i see some life back in the phone, but I am not able to get the NO_BB_iPhone3,1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore.ipsw to 'take' in iTunes (10.5.3) (on a Mac 10.6.8) without it not working and showing the error message 11 or 1600.

My brain does not seem to be working now. I seem to be able to get the iPhone in DFU mode: the screen is black when I connect to iTunes. Before I even got to this point, the phone would only display the silver apple logo..... The phone is currently not seen by Tiny Umbrella (5.10.6) any Help is much appreciated! Thank you.

You need you host file to point to apple, not cydia. You also need to be in pwned dfu for the custom fw restore to push through.

HI Justinred, Ok. Yes that was it. I did the test like we ran before..... entering gs.apple.com until it went to the apple website (ie. 404 not found...). you were right, it was going to cydia, I changed the ip#'s in the host file and it was picked up by the TSS server (tiny Umbrella) and I made sure that TU was 1. set to cydia unchecked, and 2. TSS server off.... Finally, apple was displayed by the browser.... Then I was able to restore.

I wonder going forward - (programs are being restored by iTunes now). So after this, I will Jailbreak with Redsnow. When do I reset my Hosts file the way they were before I needed to allow iTunes to contact Apple? Would this be after the program restore in iTunes, and before the Jailbreak? Or would this be after I jailbreak it?

And thank you for your help. Slowly this is all starting to make a bit more sense....

Another question... is pwned dfu mode different from just dfu mode?

And finally, this whole mess started by installing BBSettings. I guess that app is not ready for 5.0.1 yet. Learned this the hard way..... At least, I think this is what happened when I restarted the phone and had to restore to get rid of the endless silver apple logo

No need no change back host file. It was tinyumbrella that pointed host to cydia, it does that if you tick set host file to cydia in advanced tab. Yes pwned dfu is not the same as plain dfu. Bootrom is exploited in pwned dfu to allow a successful custom fw restore. No idea abput BBSetting as I dont use it, best to read description for ios5 compatibility before installing.
