How to fix some mysterious problems.

I've recently been given an iPhone 3gs but it was broken and I've tried to fix it and now I'm at the Emergency Call screen. When I trid to restore it through iTunes I got as far as when it tells me I don't have a sim card installed. I've tried various sim cards but it still says I don't have one installed for some reason. I looked up how to do it without a sim card and someone said to type in redsnow rc18 into the Emergency Call screen. The problem I have found is that i cannot type letters into the Emergency Call screen. Can someone please help me with this?

You need to jailbreak/hacktivate using redsn0w to get past the activation screen.

You don't type in redsn0w - instead, you download redsn0w (you can get it here) and run it on your device. Click jailbreak and follow the instructions, and it should "hacktivate" (unofficially activate) your device and jailbreak it.
