Is it possible to downgrade an iPhone 3G without having saved blobs? I'm thinking something like the possibility to downgrade an 3GS to 4.1 without having the shsh files.

sorry for the misunderstanding, thanks to @pepper

you can shift + restore to the iOS 3 IPSW file and then run a jailbreak over it.

Is the jailbreaking part after restoring to iOS 3 mandatory?

This Friday I think I'll try to restore an iPhone 3G from 4.2.1 to iOS 3 and I will tell you how things worked out.

No. A jailbreak is not mandatory after a restore. You may need to use recboot or tinyumbrella exit recovery on the likelyhood that you encounter a 1015 restore error. No need to be jaibroken to use recboot or tinyumbrella exit recovery as well.

SHSH blobs did not exist before iOS4. You should be able to downgrade to any 2.x or 3.x version, possibly with having to kick out of recovery due to baseband mismatch.

Interesting... Can somebody provide me a definitive answer? :D I can cook a custom fw for baseband preservation and use iReb for getting out of recovery mode.

I believe that if you have the ORIGINAL iPhone 3G (NOT 3GS), you should be able to. I did successfully downgrade an MB Model iPod Touch 2G without blobs this way.

I think if you just throw it into recovery mode, you should be able to downgrade no problem, save for the fact that you lose ALL data (iTunes can't restore a 4.x backup on a 3.x firmware)

Yes, I am refering to the iPhone 3G, not 3GS.
