How to Jailbreak Using Redsn0w 0.9.9b9d

Attention 3Gs users: This tutorial was done on an iPhone 4, there will be additional steps such as choosing "yes" if you have new bootrom, "no" if you have old bootrom when doing this on a 3Gs. If the 3rd to 5th digit of 3Gs serial number is 941 or below, it is old bootorm. If 945 and above, it is new bootrom. Those in between 941-945, use iDetector by iH8sn0w to determine if old or new bootrom. All 3Gs with 0 and 1 as 3rd digit are new bootrom.

  • 3rd digit is the year: 9 is 2009. 0 is 2010. 1 is 2011 and so on.
  • 4th and 5th digits are the week: 45 is 45th week of the year.

A. Extract redsn0w _win/mac _0.9.9b9d.zip.

For windows users, right click redsn0w.exe/properties/compatibility tab. Set in winxpsp3 (If WIN OS is not XP) compatibility mode. All windows versions should tick run as administrator. Temporarily disable antivirus.

B. Connect device and launch redsn0w. iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd-generation users may need to specify the ipsw. To do this, click Extras, then Select IPSW and navigate to the ipsw for the iOS version on your device. More than likely, you already have this file. See this FAQ entry for where to look for it. If you have a different device and redsn0w complains that it's unable to identify your build, or "no identifying data fetched," this applies to you too, although so far, those two devices are the only ones confirmed to have this issue. Otherwise, you may proceed to step C.

C. Click Jailbreak.

alt text

D. Follow onscreen instruction to turn off device. Click next.

alt text

E. Follow onscreen instructions to place device in DFU mode.

alt text

If you did DFU Steps incorrectly, you will see this pop up, Click OK to redo steps.

alt text

F. If DFU done correctly, Redsn0w will then identify your device. Then device will reboot. Then redsn0w may need to download the needed data from apple servers. Be patient as your waiting time depends on your internet connection.

alt text

G. Tick "install cydia" then click next. Device will reboot once again and the pwnapple logo will appear on device.

alt text

H. You should now have cydia icon on your device screen. If you are on 4.3.4, 4.3.5, 5.0 or 5.0.1 (except old bootrom 3Gs), cydia icon will appear white and crash on launch so continue to steps below to boot tethered your device.
