How to fix some mysterious problems.

I decided to update my previously jailbroken iPad from 3.2 to 4.2.1 tonight and encountered some problems. The problems aren't the actual concern though. After I updated, I turned the thing on to discover that apps and such that I downloaded from Cydia were still there, my music and emails, etcetera were all there, but photos and Cydia itself were gone.

Now every time I've ever updated any iPhone or this iPad, It erases everything and starts from scratch, then I have to restore from a backup or set up as a new device. So why did this happen? I checked and found that it was indeed showing 4.2.1, but when I tried to restore from backup to get my photos back, it wouldn't do it. Everything worked fine, I could create folders by dragging the icons on top of each other and all that jazz... but this has me very baffled and confused.

I did finally restore to factory and now am restoring from backup (successfully so far), but has this ever happened to anyone else?

If you Update in iTunes instead of Restore, nothing should get erased - except the jailbreak of course.

I just updated my iPhone 4 to 4.2.1 in iTunes yesterday and everything was erased. The last time I updated my iPad in iTunes it was all erased as well, then restored from backup. It's like that every time for me. But this was a first.

Ah well, it was just very strange to me, so I figured I'd ask.
