How to fix some mysterious problems.

I have had a frustrating few days!

First I mistakenly upgraded my iphone 3gs 32gb and got into the recovery loop, I managed to get out of this and then by some miracle iTunes updated the phone to ios5 but it wouldn't activate because it kept telling me there was no sim inserted (there is and it's from the original carrier O2).

After hours of trying anything and everything I jaibreaked it again using Redsn0w - yipee all worked all activated all apps and everything there but still no service.

Please can anyone help? I have smoked about 200 cigs in the last 3 days trying to sort this out!

What is.the model and modem firmware in settings/general/about? Google the model to check if that unit is indeed O2 locked, which I doubt to be so.

Hi Model = MC133B Modem Firmware = 06.15.00

Searched and found some helpful info so installed Ultrasn0w etc, did another jailbreak, rebooted, made sure location services weren't activated bla bla bla.

Still in the same position - no sim works, the phone is either constantly searching or showing no service. Originally the phone was on O2 but was unlocked and has been used on Orange, I don't have access to the sims that did work because this is actually my brothers phone which I gifted him a while ago when I upgraded and then messed up when I mistakenly updated. I have tried sims from both O2 and Orange (PAYG) both loaded with credit

From devteam blog. "Also, some iPhone3GS users with the 06.15 baseband may have tried to install iOS5 using a stock IPSW (even though you should never ever try to use a stock IPSW if you’re an ultrasn0w unlocker). If you did try this, your baseband is probably in an inconsistent state, and you’ll need to reflash the 06.15 baseband again (using redsn0w). Be very careful if you use redsn0w to reflash the iPad baseband — don’t interrupt the process1 And please avoid using stock IPSWs in the future :) Unlockers should never go near stock IPSWs."

Try reinstall ipad baseband.

Sorted!!

Don't think I have enough breath left in me to detail all steps but a summary is -

I had to use the stock IPSW for iOS5 as I am a Windows user and Redsn0w_win_0.9.9b4 wouldn't accept a custom IPSW. One positive is my iPhone 3GS has the old bootrom.

Installed Ultrasn0w on my device via Cydia - still no service.

Ran redsnow again, pointed to stock IPSW (as before)

Entered DFU and chose Jailbreak - Jailbreak and install Cydia

After some activity I ticked boxes for install Cydia and iPad Baseband

Some really scary messages follow but I thought 'what the hell' and clicked next!!!

iPhone went into it's jailbreak sequence and I just left it to do its stuff (heeding the warning of not interrupting)

Process completed whilst I was out of the room so iPhone was asleep when I returned.......with my heart in my mouth I woke it up and hey presto everything was there all apps and personal stuff and most wonderful of all an Orange service showing 4 bars!

I'm so grateful for help and suggestions and hope my experience will help others.

If you used an iOS5 OFW, your modem firmware (baseband) is now 4.11. Restore to 4.3.5 ASAP to downgrade your baseband to 4.10 ASAP while it is being signed. Afterwhich use redsn0w 9.9b5 (mac) or sn0wbreeze 2.8b8 to build a 5.0 and restore to that to keep 4.10 baseband. Then buy a gevey sim from applenberry.com to unlock.
