Same answer as above. Currently, you cannot keep your unlock with the 05.12.01 baseband using the greenp0ison jailbreak. The most recent version you may upgrade to is 4.1 using pwnagetool, but ONLY if you have 4.1 SHSH blobs saved.

What disadvantages do I have if I change the baseband?

Which baseband do you want to change to? If you upgrade to 4.2.1, you will be upgraded to the 05.15 baseband, which you cannot unlock. If you upgrade to the 06.15 baseband, there are reports of problems using GPS and bluetooth, and no way to downgrade.

Please use comments rather than adding a new answer. But no, there is no unlock for 05.15.

I got 3GS (new bootrom) currently running 4.1 with 05.13.04 (ultrasn0w of course).

I want update to 4.2.1, but what is the safest way of doing it? Will PWNAGETOOL 4.1.3 carefuly update to 4.2.1 without flashing baseband change?

Or we should wait a bit?

Yes, but with which JB is he talking about? Currently, he can't unlock using GP if he wants to keep the unlock!

(06 Feb '11, 12:42) gomanski gomanski's gravatar image

It depends. Which jailbreak do you want to use?

Currently, you can jailbreak your 3GS with greenp0ison, but updating to 4.2.1 will update your baseband. there is no way to upgrade to 4.2.1 on an iPhone 3GS while preserving your 05.12.01 baseband!

Here's what @musclenerd from the iPhone Dev Team has to say about it:

@smackingfreeze: @MuscleNerd @chpwn sir shld I wait being 3GS for the GP exploit be ported to PT?? @Musclenerd: @smackingfreeze yep please wait :) It's exciting few days but 3GS unlockers really have to wait for PT or SB updates

Like Musclenerd says, once there is an updated version of PwnageTool or Sn0wBreeze available that preserves the baseband, you can upgrade to 4.2.1.

Currently, you can use PwnageTool 4.1.2 (download) to jailbreak iOS 4.1 while keeping your 05.12.01 baseband.

so i need to wait

If you want to keep your 05.12.01 baseband (reccomended), yes, you should wait. You also have the option of upgrading to the iPad firmware, but there have been reports of problems with GPS and Bluetooth, and there is no way to downgrade as of yet.
