Thanks in advance to all you wonderful people.

redsn0w 0.9.6rc17 will jailbreak + install the iPad baseband for a unlock.

you have to install the iPad baseband (6.15) using redsn0w. but it has side effects, read below.

  • There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.

  • If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).

  • Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).

Guide: (restore to 4.2.1 if you haven't)

  • get redsn0w from here

  • get your IPSW from here

  • open redsn0w, browse for the 4.2.1 IPSW

  • go next, select "Install Cydia" and "Install iPad Baseband" options.

  • click next, follow redsn0w for DFU etc.

  • when it's all done, open Cydia on your iPhone and Search for ultrasn0w and install it.

  • reboot, you're unlocked + jailbroken.

Sorry to be such a noob, but should I put in a SIM card before I jailbreak?

(01 Jun '11, 13:42) nmdelrio nmdelrio's gravatar image

no need.

I tried using redsn0w 0.9.8rc17 (win) but during 'fetching ipad baseband files', redsn0w just quits. could it be the apple servers storing the baseband files restricting the 'fetch'? I tried several times. :-( I even tried disbling the anti-virus software. Any ideas?

Make sure that you aren't downoading something else or your brother isn't playing xbox on your Internet connection.

Before you do any of the above, make sure you have checked with original provider about an official unlock.......... if it's AT&T then forget it

So you mean AT&T iPhone 3G 4.2.1 baseband 05.15.04 cannot be unlocked?

(This is an old 3G of my brother that I found in a drawer.)

(01 Jun '11, 13:32) nmdelrio nmdelrio's gravatar image

it can be unlocked.

I mean AT&T don't do official unlocks but many other providers do, which is an option that should be exhausted before doing the dreaded iPad BB option. Do you know the iPhones origin?, where are you based?

The owner of the iphone (my brother) is based in Canada. I suspect the operator was Rogers, maybe. But I am not in Canada.

(01 Jun '11, 15:17) nmdelrio nmdelrio's gravatar image

Well if you want to avoid the iPad BB you may have to apply yourself a little, it's your choice in the end, I'm just pushing the option coz it's a better one than the iPad BB, if it's available via the original carrier

(01 Jun '11, 16:12) venusanann venusanann's gravatar image

I'm on Rogers and they WILL NOT unlock the phone for you.

(01 Jun '11, 16:15) therealcmac therealcmac's gravatar image

@therealcmac i remember hearing that Canadian carriers were going to start offering official unlocks for a fee, did this become true or has some tough conditions?

(01 Jun '11, 23:13) knightz4u knightz4u's gravatar image

Ok, I did sone looking on the Internet and apparently Rogers and fido will unlock you phone when your initial contract has run it's course for a fee of $50, there are a bunch of rules attached such as the phone must have been under your name and on your contract, you cannot buy a phone off of eBay and have them unlock it for you. Very interesting and definitely not something that they advertise AT ALL. I believe TELUS may be planning or already does the same thing. I have a buddy that works there I will talk to him and get the lowdown :)

(01 Jun '11, 23:44) therealcmac therealcmac's gravatar image

@knightz4u just talked to customer support for Rogers and yes they will unlock an iphone that you had under contract when the contract is finished as long as your account is in good standing! HA, I learn all kinds of things around here, i will definately have to remember that when i buy my new iphone 7 when my contract expires :p

thanks, but I am not in Canada right now. It's my brother's old iphone, he's the one who lives in Canada. So I had no choice but to upgrade to bb 6.15 to make it work :-(

(03 Jun '11, 04:21) nmdelrio nmdelrio's gravatar image

Thanks, all you wonderful people!

After somes tries with redsn0w 0.9.6rc16, I was able to unlock, though needed to upgrade to baseband 6.15.00, it's working now.

Many thanks!

I follow the instruction, but it doesn't work. It is not unlocked still. Current version of Ultrasn0w is 1.2.5. I think it doesn't support 05.15.04 3G. HOw can I make it? Please...

5.15.04 BB cannot be unlocked with ultrasn0w.

Read the FAQ here

Did you use redsn0w 0.9.6rc17? Read the warnings above before updating your baseband to the iPad BB 6.15.00.

(06 Feb '12, 11:02) nmdelrio nmdelrio's gravatar image

Hi I followed the directions and started with Iphone 3gs (older then the warning in the redsn0w install). I now have cydia on my iphone, but my phone won't connect to the internet. The wifi button is greyed out and I cannot select it. I was on AT&T a few years ago with the phone and have lived out of country since the contract ended. When I left the country the wifi stopped working. I can't get online and Cydia won't seem to do anything without internet connect. Is there anything I can do? Have I installed this 6.15.00BB for nothing now? Thanks!
