Holding home+power should do it, how long have you held the buttons? A black screen is not recovery mode, you're likely in DFU. Recovery shows the iTunes>USB graphic.

I guess it is in DFU, but i have held home and power for a long time and all that happens is that there is a quick change of brightness then it turns black again.

(10 May '11, 21:27) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Release the buttons as soon as the screen flashes like that.

(10 May '11, 21:28) Endareth Endareth's gravatar image

Hmmm.. need a little more info. Was it jailbroken before? After limera1n finished, it should have simply rebooted, did limera1n have any errors? Are you on Windows or Mac?

(10 May '11, 21:30) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

the reason i thought it was recovery mode is because when it was plugged up to my pc iTunes recognized the ipad, said it was in recovery mode, then wanted me to restore it. I tried to restore it but it didn't work, probably for the same reason it wouldn't complete the updates to newer firmware.

(10 May '11, 21:32) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

iTunes calls recovery mode and DFU mode "recovery." Have you updated iTunes?

(10 May '11, 21:33) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

it wasnt jailbroken before, i was in the process of jailbreaking it, and it wouldnt reboot

(10 May '11, 21:33) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

yes, but it wont let me update the ipad

(10 May '11, 21:34) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Have you updated iTunes?

(10 May '11, 21:34) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Yes i have updated iTunes.

(10 May '11, 21:36) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Mac or Windows?

(10 May '11, 21:40) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Windows

(10 May '11, 21:40) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

When you try to restore in iTunes, what error number does it give you?

(10 May '11, 21:41) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

i'm pretty sure it kept saying my connection times out, but i know that it didnt

(10 May '11, 21:42) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Click this: gs.apple.com

Do you get a TSS page, or an Apple 404 page?

(10 May '11, 21:43) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Double-check that you don't have an entry for gs.apple.com in your hosts file, and try using a different computer.

(10 May '11, 21:44) Endareth Endareth's gravatar image

i clicked on the link but it said page not found???

(10 May '11, 21:47) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

It says "Hmm, the page you’re looking for can’t be found," right? I was just verifying that your hosts file isn't pointing to cydia.

(10 May '11, 21:51) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Yes, that's exactly what it says. btw I'm sorry i am so clueless

(10 May '11, 21:52) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

That's alright, this site wouldn't have much traffic if it weren't for the clueless. :P

Your hosts file is fine, at least we know that much. Now open iTunes, click the Restore button, and if it gives you an error, tell me what it says, and the error number if there is one.

(10 May '11, 21:58) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

There is no error number, but the notification says " There was a problem downloading the Software for the Ipad "Ipad" the network connectin timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."

(10 May '11, 22:07) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

and it said that same thing when i tried to update my firmware

(10 May '11, 22:09) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

There must be something wrong with your internet connection to Apple then, or their servers are having issues. If you want to restore to 4.3.3, I can walk you through it, using a different method. If you've never run TinyUmbrella to save your SHSH's, you can't restore to any version other than 4.3.3 anyway.

(10 May '11, 22:11) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

can i estore it even thought the whole screen is black?

(10 May '11, 22:14) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

and if not how can i get my ipad out of DFU mode?

(10 May '11, 22:15) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Get your 4.3.3 firmware here. Open iTunes, hold down the shift key on your keyboard, and click the Restore button. A dialog box will pop up, go to where you downloaded the ipsw and select it. Hopefully this will work. Once it's done, get redsn0w rc16 here.

(10 May '11, 22:16) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Yes, you can restore while in DFU. When it's done it should boot normally.

(10 May '11, 22:16) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

ya its gonna be a while... sorry, my computer is kinda slow

(10 May '11, 22:23) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

No prob, I'll be around for awhile, and if not, someone else will be.

(10 May '11, 22:28) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

it failed over half way through because it aid the file could not be read

(10 May '11, 22:29) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Ah, well there's the reason it wouldn't work through iTunes. You obviously have network issues. Do you have another computer you can try, just to rule out the possibility that it's something on your PC?

I just downloaded it myself, using the same link, no problems. Apple's servers are apparently ok, has to be on your end.

(10 May '11, 22:36) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

It just finished downloading and the dialog box popped up, what do i do now?

(10 May '11, 22:37) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

I thought it failed? Anyway, navigate to it and select it. Hopefully it's not corrupt.

(10 May '11, 22:38) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

I am confused, it wants me to type in a file name?

(10 May '11, 22:40) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Ya the first try failed but the second try worked

(10 May '11, 22:41) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

No, you don't type it in. Just go to where it downloaded and it should show up. If it doesn't, then your browser renamed it to a zip file (common problem). If it doesn't show, post back and I'll tell you how to fix it.

(10 May '11, 22:45) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

wait... i don't know where it downloaded, as far as i know it just downloaded under downloads, then i opened it

(10 May '11, 22:49) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

wait i found it, now what?

(10 May '11, 22:50) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Do i click open and then download redsn0w?

(10 May '11, 22:51) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Yes, well you click open and iTunes will restore the iPad, which will take a few minutes. Download redsn0w in the meantime but don't run it until iTunes is done, because it will immediately close iTunes when you run redsn0w.

(10 May '11, 22:54) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

wait nevermind

(10 May '11, 22:55) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

the one i almost opened was iPad1,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore, not iPad1,1_4.33_Restore_ispw.

(10 May '11, 22:57) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

That won't work unless you have SHSH's for 4.2.1, and have your hosts file pointing at cydia, which you don't.

(10 May '11, 22:59) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

ts not there (sigh)

Look in your browser's settings for the location it puts downloads in.

(10 May '11, 23:01) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

how?

(10 May '11, 23:03) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

i have the little pop up that shows my history and that i right click to open the file, butthat doesnt seem to do anything

(10 May '11, 23:04) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

the download history that is

(10 May '11, 23:05) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

What browser are you using?

(10 May '11, 23:05) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

I use Mozilla Firefox, and i all that i see is a little pop up with my download history

(10 May '11, 23:06) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Firefox is the best, that's what I use. Go to Tools/Options and then the General tab. Download location is on that tab.

(10 May '11, 23:10) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

i saw where they were saved to but tere were only two files that were very old, not the firmware file

(10 May '11, 23:13) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

none of the tings have downloaded are in the downloads folder

(10 May '11, 23:16) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

That's bizarre. Right-click this link, choose "Save link as" and put it on your desktop so it'll be easy to find.

(10 May '11, 23:18) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

it said "the file could not be restored because the firmware is not compatible" when i tried to open it

(10 May '11, 23:22) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Then your iTunes is too old. What version is it? In iTunes, click Help/About iTunes from the top menu bar.

(10 May '11, 23:24) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

10.2.2.14 o

10.2.2.14

(10 May '11, 23:27) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Whoah... OK, then either the ipsw is corrupt (what's the file size anyway) or you have an iPad 2.

(10 May '11, 23:29) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

This is crazy, I have iTunes 10.2.2.12, and iTunes says that's the latest version.

(10 May '11, 23:35) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

maybe I'm not ment to have an up-to-date iPad, well can you tell me how to get my iPad out of DFU mode?

(10 May '11, 23:37) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

Just checked, iTunes latest is 10.2.2.14, I guess it's just not offering it to me because it's a very minor update from 10.2.2.12.

(10 May '11, 23:38) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Have you tried iREB? Get it from ih8sn0w.com, open it, choose the "Recovery mode loop fixer" tab and click the big "Set auto-boot true" button. I know it's not in recovery loop, but this may work.

(10 May '11, 23:41) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

(10 May '11, 23:44) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

AVG

(11 May '11, 21:26) bworsham bworsham's gravatar image

From what I'm reading, either your antivirus software or your firewall are interfering with the download. Try disabling AVG and Windows firewall, temporarily, and see if it lets you restore.

We're not concerned with jailbreaking yet, just getting it running, stock.

(11 May '11, 21:48) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

You weren't able to turn it off??? I used to use AVG (switched to MS Security Essentials because AVG used too much RAM/CPU) and as I recall, disabling it was pretty straightforward. Can you add iTunes to the exception list?

(11 May '11, 21:50) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

If I were in your shoes, I'd just uninstall AVG, then try the restore. If it worked, I'd be finding a different anti-virus program. If it didn't, I'd re-install it. It's a hassle, but who wants a $500+ paperweight?
