Does jailbreaking slow down your iPhone 4 or give u viruses and screw up your iPhone?

No. Jailbreaking alone won't do any of those things. After jailbreaking, you could go nuts installing all sorts of things through Cydia and slow down your phone, or even get it stuck in a boot loop. If you install OpenSSH and don't change the default (and well-known) password, you could get a virus. Think of a jailbroken iPhone like you would a computer. There's all kinds of software out there on the Internet. Do you just randomly install stuff and never expect anything bad to happen? Not likely. Does this mean the Internet gave you a virus or slowed down/screwed up your computer? No. You did, by not paying attention and not thinking. It's the same with a jailbroken iPhone.

Nothing will happen if you don't install OpenSSH. It's only needed if you want to browse the device's filesystem wirelessly. It comes in handy if you somehow can't boot all the way, by allowing you to go in and delete whatever the problem is, but it's not necessary.

Ok thanks..

BTW, barrell will slow down your phone as much as any single tweak I can think of off-hand. There's always a performance hit with eye candy. You have to decide if it's worth the trade-off for you.

What do you mean should i remove Barrel?

(07 May '11, 23:45) hockey123 hockey123's gravatar image

No, I'm not saying that. It's a personal choice. It won't screw up your phone or anything like that. For example, I use Windows 7, but if you look at my desktop, you'd swear it's XP. I have Aero off, I like my theme very basic, and blazing fast. I prefer function over form, but that's just me.

I dont find it slow but if i leave it will it cause any internal damage or anything?

(07 May '11, 23:50) hockey123 hockey123's gravatar image

No, not at all. If you like it, by all means "roll" with it. :P

Lol ok.. Also does jailbreaking your device increase the risk of your iphone breaking or malfunctioning?

No. It's just software. You can always undo the jailbreak by restoring to stock firmware in iTunes. You can't do any permanent damage through jailbreaking.

Oh ok so overall its safe? Does it decrease the security on the iphone when its jailbroken?

(08 May '11, 00:13) hockey123 hockey123's gravatar image

No. If you don't install OpenSSH, or if you change the default password if you do install it, you're every bit as secure as you would be if you weren't jailbroken. It's just a phone, though, people can still stand behind you and listen to you talk to your girlfriend. Jailbreaking won't stop that, nor will it make it easier. :P

Think of Cydia as the alternate (actually the first) app store. You can install every app from Apple App Store and it probably will slow down your device, so it is not recommended. Choose a bunch of handy apps and you should be fine. Clogging up your device with apps you will never use is inefficient.

There are ways to increase your devices true/total potential via Cydia apps such as Speed Intensifier which can overclock your device, but then again this comes with the effect of using more battery power. Mix and match and you will be fine.
