How to fix some mysterious problems.

Hi, I've really been trying to look if it's possible to upgrade my iphone 3g from 3.0.1 to 3.1.3 instead of upgrading it to the current 4.3.3. I really want to know if this is possible, and how? Thanks!

Yep, just shift/alt restore to a 3.1.3 ipsw, no shsh's required.

Haha, really? that easy? I recently upgraded my i4 and had to go through custom firmware, baseband preservation, etc. so i was curious if i had to do the same for i3g

So, I'm guessing I just need to use sn0wbreeze/pwnagetool using custom fw 3.1.3 ipsw and then use that custom fw created using sn0wbreeze/pwnagetool and use shift/alt

Will it be necessary to preserve my baseband for i3g if I'm looking for and unlock?

Lastly, I've read a lot of people getting some errors when they try to downgrade from 4.x to 3.1.3. will i have an errors? If yes, would you know a solution to it?

You don't need to use a custom firmware, you can do it with stock then jailbreak with jailbreakme right on your iphone browser, which might be the better option as there's no reason why you can't upgrade to the 5.12.xx baseband contained in the 3.1.3 firmware, it's still unlockable .

It's only that easy because the signature check for the iphone3G didn't start happening until ios4 was released.

Ah, gotcha! Really appreciate the help!

Just for personal knowledge, would it be possible to use custom fw to do the same thing?

You can but it will preserve your baseband and their is no point in doing that, and I'm not sure if the newer versions of the JB tools will recognise an ios3 ipsw, so you may have to go back through the versions to find one that is compatible. I'd still vote for stock shift/alt - restore to 3.1.3 followed by jailbreakme, but it's up to you.

Edit:- it maybe that older versions of Pwnage/Sn0wbreeze (not sure on SB with 3.1.3 firmwae anyway) will allow a baseband upgrade by making a selection in expert mode.
