which of these is the best to currently jailbreak on? I have an ipod touch 4g 8gb. i know that 4.2.1 takes up the least memory for the root partition but are there any real advantages to the 4.3.x firmwares?

If you really want to stay on 4.2.1 why not use Redsn0w 0.9.6rc14 to jailbreak it, more stable than GP.
