How to fix some mysterious problems.

About a year and a half ago, I managed to jailbreak and untether my 3GS. It took me many attempts, my cognitive abilities are sorely compromised, and concentration is difficult.

When I arrived in the Big City, the emergency for which I'd purchased the phone, I was holding a dead brick in my hands. In reading through the forums during the last days, I suspect that I managed to only partially untether the phone, plugged it into Mac, and ended up with my useless phone.

I'm finally overcoming my techno-phobia, to try again. Or, to chuck this thing out and buy an Android. My question in this moment is which system I should be installing. And any other advice on how to make the process easier this time. One way it will be easier, is I now know I can turn on wifi at home, instead of going to the library. Thanks for helping.

Unless the 3GS is an old bootrom, the only iOS you can install on it (other than keeping the current one) is 6.1.6. Just plug it into your Mac, open iTunes, if you want to backup your data then click "Backup", and after that, "Restore".

I don't really understand one thing: What is wrong with the iPhone now? There is no partial untether. My guess is that you jailbroke semi-tethered. In that case, you can boot up with redsn0w, install an untether package for your iOS version, and continue where you left off.

Hi. I've just now seen this answer. Yes, I think semi-tethered. I'm pretty sure 6.16 is what I'd installed earlier, will do so again.

What's wrong now is that I cannot make calls, it only reads no service. Actually, I no longer know, maybe it's just due to no signal here. I haven't even tried to use the phone for the couple years since I found it useless.

I thought that when I plug it into iTunes, it reverts back to the non jail-broken status.

"Install an untether package": is this laid out in the redsn0w instructions? or something additional. Thanks very much.

You probably upgraded your baseband and it removed an unlock you did in your past jailbreak. Check if your baseband is 06.15.00 in redsn0w, and also, please write your serial number to see if it is safe for you to even attempt this.
