How to fix some mysterious problems.

I am running iTunes 11.4 on a Snow Leopard Mac, which is incompatible with iOS9 (if I only I knew this yesterday!!!). I made the foolish mistake of upgrading my iPad Air to iOS9. I wisely backed up the iPad Air to iTunes. But, now I find that I cannot connect to iTunes. I found and downloaded the iPad4,1_8.4.1_12H321_Restore.ipsw file.

I would prefer not to jailbreak. I simply want to restore my iPad Air to the previous iOS. My 2008 Mac running iTunes won't see the iPad Air now (due to iOS 9). I have a machine running Mountain Lion (not upgraded because that breaks Aperture) and it will not see the iPad Air either. I probably can get access to a friend's machine running Yosemite, however.

Suggestions and steps on how to do the downgrade or restore to 8.4.1 would be appreciated. Thanks!!
