How to fix some mysterious problems.

My iPod Touch 5 running 8.1 is stuck on a constant non-stop loading screen that just appears after the apple logo has disappeared upon reboot. The hard-boot does not resolve issue and doing the substrate option (holding down volume up button, sleep button and home button) doesn't work either. I then thought my last resort is factory restore via iTunes but iTunes doesn't pick up on my iPod when I connect iPod to my laptop via USB. I don't know any other options and am willing to take on-board new ones. What should I do?

  1. Download the 8.4 ipsw from here.

  2. Plug device into computer via USB. Don't look at the device, concentrate on the counting. Hold home+power for 10 seconds, then release power but keep holding home for 12 more seconds. Screen should be black.

  3. Open iTunes, hold shift (alt/option on Mac) and click "Restore iPod."

  4. Select the ipsw you downloaded in step 1.

Note that this will only work as long as Apple is signing 8.4. Right now, they still are, but it could change at any time. Check here.
