How to fix some mysterious problems.

I was on ios 4.2.1 on my iPad. It was jailbroken untethered with Greenpois0n. It suddenly rebooted and its on a recovery mode loop. When I try to restore the firmware it keeps giving iTunes error 9. I cant seem to restore it. Please help.

If you're on Windows, try iREB (SECOND tab) to kick it out.

Check your cable, USB port, and dock connector.

Error 9: This error occurs when the device unexpectedly drops off of the USB bus and communication stops. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB isolation troubleshooting, using a different USB dock connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

Have you tried iREB?

(11 Apr '11, 01:16) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

If that doesn't work, I think you have a hardware issue.

ok I will try iReb. Are you sure that if iReb doesnt work then its a hardware issue? Any instructions on using iReb?

iREB is simple, just click the "Recovery mode loop fixer" tab at the top center. Then click the huge button labeled "Set auto-boot true."

No, I'm not positive it's a hardware issue. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Thanks for the help. Took it to the apple service center. It was a hardware issue. Got a replacement. Phew!

From theiphonewiki itunes errors list:-

Error 9

Seems to be a kernel panic. After patching kernel in PwnageTool with custom patches, restore failed with this. iRecovery then showed increased kernel panic count.

Make of it what you will

I have seen error 9 before on 2 different iPhones and was not able to restore them despite trying everything under the sun for a very long time ..... at the end i turned them into spare parts.

Yeah, OP says it was hardware issue and Apple replaced it, be nice to know what piece of hardware actually failed.

They probably just looked at it, saw the recovery screen, and gave him a new one. I doubt they took the time to diagnose it and tell the OP what failed. Then again, maybe it's a known (internally) issue.

I'd be surprised if they didn't hook it up to their genius Macbook pros' lol, be nice if OP had more information, maybe/hopefully he'll post back and give us the lowdown on error 9
