Hi,

It sounds as if after downloading the file, you have "unpacked it". If you download the firmware again and it has an extension of .zip then just right click on the file -> rename then delete the .zip and replace it with .ipsw (This is assuming you are using a windows machine)

Then go to iTunes again and try the restore again, pointing at the .ipsw file you just renamed

Downgrading the firmware is not gonna downgrade the baseband, so if you can't unlock on 4.2.1 you still wont be able to on 4.0.1

i was trying to downgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.0.1. there are loads of instructions telling you it can be done by adding the fake signing to your host file, but i get error 3194. i read that everyone who can do this has previously stored their shsh files. this forum suggests no shsh no downgrade. is that correct? i guess the shsh are specific to the phone so i cant find them anywhere?

Correct. Unless you saved your shsh's before Apple stopped signing whatever version you're trying to downgrade to, you can't downgrade.

You should get TinyUmbrella (thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com), click "Save SHSH" and see what it has for you.

Why are you downgrading from 4.2.1 to 4.0.1?, and by the looks of it you either don't have any shsh's or you have an incorrectly modified hosts file. You can use TinyUmbrella to pull any shsh's on file with Cydia
