I've just upgraded to 4.3 using a CFW built with sn0wbreeze and now I'm attempting to restore contacts, messages etc from a backup made with itunes.

The backup is a few months old and I'm not sure what I would have used for the password back then. I've tried everything I can think of but, itunes just keeps throwing the message

itunes could not restore the iphone "iphone" because a session could not be started with the iPhonebe started with the iPhone.

Is this itunes way of telling me my password attempts are wrong, or is this another problem entirely? Is there any other way to rescue my contacts from the backup without the password?

It sounds more like you're using an older version of iTunes. Do you have the latest iTunes installed?

I would suggest weekly backups in iTunes. I would also suggest you get dropbox (this puts your keepass accessible on the internet and on your iPhone) and keepass and start recording all your passwords.

Also I would keep off the cutting edge and go to 4.1.2 if you have blobs for that firmware.

As far as your backup I would do a passworded backup in your current state and try restoring that and use a wrong password and see if it does the same thing as with your 2 month old backup.

Are you PC or Mac? Where are you contacts backed up to? I am PC and back my contacts up to outlook. So if my backups failed I could always pull them from there.

I use keepass (which is synced to dropbox) but, wasn't at the time of my last backup.

I didn't realize I could access my keepass passwords on my iphone though, I'll look into that.

I have a 3 week old backup of my contacts in my dropbox I ade using pkgbackup but, pkgbackup isn't running under 4.3 so, I was looking for an alternative.

Looks like I'll just downgrade to 4.2.1 or 4.1 and restore that backup.

Thanks for your help.

Didn't you do a backup before you upgraded?

I wasn't able to. I was stuck in a boot loop unable to load the springboard. The only way I was able to get itunes to detect it was either in Recovery or DFU mode. Otherwise it just gave me a 'unable to connect to this device for unknown reasons' or similar message.

To Avoid this problem rebuild custom firmware WITHOUT 'hacktivation' enabled and use original SIM to activate phone.
