I went to RESET ALL CONTENT AND SETTINGS, then it said "INSERT SIM TO ACTIVATE" (something like that), then I jailbroke and installed cydia using Redsnow. the result was no icons on the screen, only Cydia.

If jailbreaking with Sn0wbreeze, Restore. Just restore your iDevice. I recommend Greenpois0n RC6 (If Software is 4.2.1 or below)

Never use RESET ALL CONTENT AND SETTINGS while jailbroken. You'll have to restore now, and start over.

I thought I could reset all content and settings and start all over with the saved IPSW? If I upgrade to 4.3, what will my new firmware be?
