How to fix some mysterious problems.

So I've got an iPhone 5 that was running iOS 6.1 (I haven't upgraded because I'm waiting on support from some tweeks) and I popped open Cydia today and found I found that I had 20 upgrades to do (2 essential). Without thinking about it I just tapped upgrade all and didn't even bother to look at the list.

After the installation of a few of them I got a few errors on the remaining and Cydia displayed the restart springboard button.I tapped it thinking nothing of the errors because I was on the road and figured it was just a data connection issue.

After my phone recovered from the springboard restart instead of going to my lockscreen it went right to the activation screen and I kept getting the "Could Not activate iPhone" Response with a little more messing I discovered SBSettings was still intact and Activator allowed me to trigger it. I could use the "More" button on SBSettings to reach the home screen but none of my apps will open from the home screen or from the search spotlight (but the spotlight keyboard did work); however all of my previous Activator actions still work.

Once I got home I plugged it in and my computer does not recognize it as my iphone but just as a generic one and I'm unable to do any messing with it via tinyumbrela. iTunes also gives me a 0xE8000065.

Any suggestions on where to go from here? I think the problem is that one of the 20 updates was meant for iOS 7 and caused an issue but I'm not sure which.

Sounds like it's time to move on to iOS 7. This is probably a good thing; if you'd waited much longer, 7.1 would be out and you'd be stuck, unable to restore without losing your jailbreak. What tweaks are you waiting on updates for? Maybe there are iOS 7 compatible equivalents.

I don't have any recent backups unfortunately. (My most recent is from new years when I synced all the new music I purchased) will any of my data be recoverable?

If it were an iPhone 4 or older device, yes, there are ways to mount the filesystem, but not on an iPhone 5 (no bootrom exploit exists). Sorry, some lessons have to be learned the hard way. :P

Ah no worries to my surprise before I left on the trip I plugged in my iPhone to add some new music and so I do have a fresh backup! Guess its time to move to iOS 7!

Unfortunately for me I remember canceling the backup mid way because I was in a hurry so I hope most of the unrecoverable stuff is intact. Being patient is its own lesson I guess :)

Remove your sim card, if it doesn't work, install ifunbox on your laptop and connect your iphone(it's better if it's on safe boot mode, you can access it from sbsetting toggles). delete from raw system file/application setup.app. (You should copy it to your pc just in case something went wrong)

iTunes will not recognize it still. I have ifunbox installed and it does not recognize it either.

Put it in DFU mode and see if iTunes recognizes it: Plug device into computer via USB. Don't look at the device, concentrate on the counting. Hold home+power for 10 seconds, then release power but keep holding home for 12 more seconds. Screen should be black. This won't help you with iFunbox, but you should be able to restore in iTunes.
