iPod Touch 1G last firmware was 3.1.3, you can only upgrade to that.

Once at 3.1.3 the simplest jailbreak is to browse (through Safari) to jailbreakme.com and slide the bar, it will jailbreak and download Cydia without even the need for a computer.

plug device in > open iTunes > update device (it will update to 3.1.3) > go to jailbreakme.com on the device.

Your data will not be deleted. Make sure you do update in iTunes and not restores.

Hmmm, I think upgrading to 3.x would be a paid upgrade, can you check in iTunes or the App Store if you can get a listing for and upgrade, I remember it was for somethin like 9.99

Yeah my dad found a 1st-gen touch on the street, literally, several months ago. He's not tech savvy, so he brought it to me. It had, as I recall, 2.2.1 also. Apple wanted $10 for the 3.1.3 firmware, which is thievery in my opinion, especially considering that there is no firmware beyond that. I didn't lose one second of sleep over the method I used to update it.. ;)

Interesting, it's now freely available on Apple's servers (3.1.3). They must have changed their policy.

Go to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and you can download 3.1.3 for the iPod Touch 1G
