I have jailbroken an iphone 3g 4.1 with redsnow successfully but when i went to itunes i started to sync like a new iphone, now I think I have lost my notes (important) and photos. Can I get them back from the back up I made before I jailbroke? When I ask itunes to restore from backup the backup I want isnt there.

Please help

OK, get a copy of the 4.2.1 firmware for your phone. Then download sn0wbreeze and drop the ipsw onto it and follow the instructions. You'll shift-restore in iTunes to the ipsw sn0wbreeze creates on your desktop. You should have no trouble with that as you've already done a downgrade, this is similar. After you get done, rt-click your phone in iTunes and restore from backup, you should get all your data back and be jailbroken on 4.2.1.

thanks, so far i have gone back to 4.2.1 and lost the jailbreak, the apps are loading now but hopefully all the data will be back.

Doesnt redsn0w work for 4.2.1.?

Tethered. That's why you have to use custom firmware if you want to be on 4.2.1 untethered. If you want that data you backed up, you have to stay on 4.2.1, because if you downgrade, it erases the phone, and you can't do a restore of user data from a backup made with a later version of the firmware than what you're currently running. You can restore user data from past iOS versions, but not future ones, in other words.

You have been a huge help, thanks very much, do i vote for you or something here??

(22 Mar '11, 23:18) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

No problem. You can "accept" the answer, it's the faint star under the thumbs up/down to the left of the answer.

(22 Mar '11, 23:20) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Did you get everything back?

(23 Mar '11, 00:18) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Turns out I had it backwards: With redsn0w, the iPhone 3G is untethered, the iPhone 4 is tethered. So, you could have used redsn0w. Sorry.

(23 Mar '11, 01:04) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

yes I did, now I am back to square one!!! Waiting for ipsw to download and sn0wbreeze and I will try that. Question; Will all my data be saved after I jailbreak and then sync with itunes (not as a new phone) notes are important.

(23 Mar '11, 10:18) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

Jailbreak but don't sync, restore from backup. Also note that you can use redsn0w if you want, it's untethered on the iPhone 3G, I was wrong about that yesterday. And redsn0w doesn't require custom firmware, but it does need a copy of the stock 4.2.1 firmware.

(23 Mar '11, 10:20) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

I am downloading custom firmware is that wrong? So I shouldnt use sn0wbreeze?

(23 Mar '11, 10:31) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

You can use sn0wbreeze, I was just letting you know that redsn0w will work untethered, contrary to what I said yesterday. In any case, you're downloading STOCK 4.2.1 from Apple, right? You'll need it for whatever method you use to jailbreak. You said you're downloading custom firmware, I hope that doesn't mean you're getting a pre-made custom ipsw from some website, always make your own custom firmware based on the official ipsw.

(23 Mar '11, 10:39) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

oh dear, i am downloading a custom one. Trouble is i need a torrent download, my speed is well slow and a normal download tends to hang

(23 Mar '11, 10:45) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

found one gonna be slow though!

(23 Mar '11, 10:51) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

You should be getting stock firmware from Apple. There's no telling what you're getting from a torrent. Apple's server is fast though, I can download a 600MB ipsw in no more than 4 minutes, so you should be able to get it at whatever your max download speed is. BUT, I bet you have it anyway, since you updated to 4.2.1. Hang on I'll tell you where to find it...

(23 Mar '11, 10:55) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

found it! In C drive, now what do I do with redsn0w?

(23 Mar '11, 11:00) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

Look in C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates

If it's there, copy (not move) it to your desktop to make it easy to find.

(23 Mar '11, 11:01) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

I am guessing I already did it!!! My mistake was not restoring on itunes, instead I continued as a new phone therefore losing all the data, I think I´ve got it now, but I might be back!! Thanks again spockers you´re a star***

(23 Mar '11, 11:09) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

All finished, jailbreaking was very easy. I do have a question not really related to jailbreaking, can I ask here?? Or will I get thrown out?

(23 Mar '11, 17:34) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

Go ahead, what is it?

(23 Mar '11, 17:48) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Actually!!! I think I have sorted it, the iphone was getting pop ups saying this accessory is not optimized for iphone, I searched this site and found someone talked about popup blocker from cydia. I have installed that and will wait and see, pretty sure its a hardware problem not software. Thanks might be back to you again!!

(23 Mar '11, 17:54) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

Well the pop up has stopped but its effect is still happening, when playing music it just stops playing and after a couple of seconds will play again, annoying!!! The phone has some dust inside, its nearly 3 years old, do you recommend taking it apart and cleaning it???

(23 Mar '11, 17:58) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

I wouldn't take it apart unless you're skilled at that sort of thing, and if you were, you wouldn't have asked. ')

I've taken apart things from car engines to cell phones (non-Apple), but I wouldn't try an iPhone.

(23 Mar '11, 18:09) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

Did you uninstall the popup blocker? You'll probably need to reboot (hold home+power until screen goes dark and Apple logo appears) after you uninstall it.

(23 Mar '11, 18:11) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

no havent uninstalled popup blocker, what will that do? The message is very annoying I dont want it back, I dont really listen to music on the iPhone I have two iPods

(23 Mar '11, 18:17) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

I thought popup blocker was causing problems? What are you getting popups from?

(23 Mar '11, 18:26) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

popups say "this accessory is not optimized for the iphone" I thought popup blocker would stop them which is does, but the effect of the popup is still occuring. I have 3 different docking stations, sony, logitech and gear4 which are all compatible for iphone, but the popups started after being docked in the sony one. Also the phone was dropped in soup some weeks ago!! I do have to point out this is not my phone! Its my boyfriends, I am trying to sort it for him, thought jailbreaking might work, but it didnt.

(23 Mar '11, 18:35) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

Ah, soup. That would do it. iPhones prefer a light broth. I'm surprised it works at all. One or more of the dock connector contacts are probably insulated by dried soup. I'd try cleaning it with a q-tip with a drop of alcohol on it, but turn the phone all the way off (red slider) first.

(23 Mar '11, 18:51) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

will try that, have already tried soft toothbrush and hairdryer etc Thanks again

(23 Mar '11, 18:54) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

I'd clean the contacts on the docking stations too.

(23 Mar '11, 18:55) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

So you've restored from backup in iTunes, but notes/photos didn't restore? That's odd, they should be there... I'm guessing you weren't syncing your notes as part of your email account (makes for another good backup method)? I think you're out of luck. For a 3G, you might be in luck for doing a disk image dump and then trying to recover data off it (I think it's only the 3GS onwards that used an encrypted file system), but it's a long, and technically challenging process.

You mean when iTunes asked if you wanted to set it up as new, or restore from backup, you chose new? Maybe you could find the actual file, if you're lucky. Here's the info on where iTunes stores backups.

Oh that's right, for some reason some people don't save their backups encrypted! :D

Can still choose to restore from backup again though.

(22 Mar '11, 21:47) Endareth Endareth's gravatar image

If you save them encrypted, does that nullify iTunes' normal pruning schedule, whatever it may be?

(22 Mar '11, 21:51) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

î cant coz i started to sync as new phone and that is now the backup that is offered, it shows an older backup in preferences/devices how do i access that one? however its a different firmware??

(22 Mar '11, 22:23) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

Yes I chose new, I am going to try diskaid do you think that will work?

Actually now that I think about it, your best bet is to try to recover the backup on your computer, using a file recovery tool. Do you have a second computer? Windows or Mac? If you're in Windows and you didn't change the default recycle bin settings, you may be able to undelete it. If it's not in the recycle bin, you need to use your compuuter as little as possible, since the system drive is where you need to recover from, and it's constantly being written to, decreasing your chances of recovering deleted files.

(22 Mar '11, 22:00) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

So there's no backup in iTunes to restore from? I don't suppose you had another backup on a different machine? (I usually have at least three machines with various backups :))

(22 Mar '11, 22:05) Endareth Endareth's gravatar image

That is out of my league I´m afraid, hoping for a more simple solution, and no i dont have another computer

Wait a minute, you downgraded from 4.2.1 to 4.1?

(22 Mar '11, 22:23) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

yes, reason was to jailbreak as i already had 4.1 ipsw not 4.2.1 it was really a matter of couldnt wait to download new ipsw

You'll have to restore to 4.2.1 to use a 4.2.1 itunes backup. You can restore a 4.1 backup in 4.2.1, but not the other way around. If you were on 4.2.1 before, you probably already have the ipsw buried in one of iTunes' folders.

(22 Mar '11, 22:31) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

will that get my data back? Then I will need to downgrade to 4.1 jailbreak and restore with itunes but NOT as a new phone. Is this right?

(22 Mar '11, 22:36) kimii1 kimii1's gravatar image

Are you on Mac or Windows?

(22 Mar '11, 22:41) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

You're going to need to build a custom 4.2.1 ipsw, then use that to upgrade and jailbreak in one step. I just need to know if you're Mac or Windows.
