How to fix some mysterious problems.

Jailbroken but I can't access Internet though 3G network, is this bug? any fix?

Added: I was upgraded from 4.01 to 4.2.1 (greenpoison), never realized I can't go online through 3G network, Wifi's fine.

The problem lies that seems 3G is present, its shows 3G is available, and if there is no WIFI, Safari still runs, albeit without no or very insignificant bandwidth

Its possible that you need to setup the APN for your carrier, in many cases the access to the APN settings is hidden away and inaccessible, there is a web tool that you can use to set your APN for 3G data access, you can start Safari (use it on Wifi) and type in the following address

once ths page loads, click on "Continue", then "Custom APN", then you can enter your APN details directly or select your carrier from the drop down menu, next click on "Create Profile" and then click "install"

Let us know how it works out for you.

Thanks that i will do straight after lunch, I am in china, Now, i suppose i have to check with my mobile provider for the APN? assumingly this is the root of my problem?

Check the webtool, it contains many working APN settings, even your chinese operator might be listed there. Good Luck!

I'm not aware of an alternative. Check if your carrier allows you to edit the APN settings using: Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network.

The "Cellular Data Network" menu may appearing or disappearing is dependent upon what the carriers allows, you can try different SIM cards from different carriers to see if one of them allows access, once in you can change the APN and put back your SIM.

Sigh, sorry guys, nothing worked, i tried both sites, even using a web proxy, no go. also i tried enabling the Cellular Data Network, even checking the carrier bundles to see if i can make it appear, i don't find the correct file or something.

This is frustrating, but I really appreciate your helps

Hopefully there is other options i can take to fix this one way or another

Can we know what work around you used, just for our benefit :-)

You could also try going to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings and see if that fixes your problems.

would that kill my jailbreak? I would rather know before hand you see

(21 Mar '11, 01:07) hkarto hkarto's gravatar image

No. Just don't "reset all" or "erase all," those are disastrous.

No it didn't work, the compass didn't work either now

(21 Mar '11, 01:22) hkarto hkarto's gravatar image

Okay, here is what i did, i tampered with txt file on the iphone config. used 91 PC suite for Iphone (china based pandaapp) to do so.

Anyway, the file is in the System>Library>Carrier Bundles>Iphone> * where * is the carrier your mobile is using, mine is Unicom_cn.bundle

edit the carrier.plist, (just realized that i didn't backup!)

the first few lines are below <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>ASCIIFileNameRequired</key> <true/>

i added
<key>AllowEDGEEditing</key> <true/> that allowed the Cellular Data net work to appear on the settings and i manually added the APN code
