How to fix some mysterious problems.

I've successfully (with help from some friendly peeps on this forum) upgraded from 4.01 to 4.2.1, jailbroken and unlocked. So far so good. But it wiped the hd, which I guess was to be expected.

In my immense newbness I somehow expected iTunes to have saved my contacts which is the only thing I really need, but synching did not produce 'em.

Are they lingering somewhere? Am I doing it wrong? Or was this just a valuable lesson to backup my shit properly before tinkering with the ol' mobile...

Thanks in advance.

If restoring from a back up doesn't bring them back then they are gone, connect to itunes and right click on your idevice and select it and choose restore from back up and select newest one.
