How did you update to 4.2.1? Did you have 4.2.1 shsh's, or did you actually update to 4.3?

yea i did, it says Version-4.2.1 (8C148)

That's surprising, you must have used TinyUmbrella at some point, or, you've actually got a 2G, not a 3G. Anyway, re-run GP with the following in mind:

Make sure you have a good, non-proxied internet connection on the computer you're running GP on.

Delete the 2 payload files from the previous GP attempt. They'll be in the folder GP is in, named iBSS.nXXap & kernelcache.release.nXX.

Ok, so presumably this all happened a week ago then. Are you able to get your device into DFU mode? See

(17 Mar '11, 00:28) Endareth Endareth's gravatar image

i had like 3 of those iBSS.nXXap files

(17 Mar '11, 00:30) moltenmike moltenmike's gravatar image

Delete 'em all.

(17 Mar '11, 00:31) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

no i cant get it into DFU mode

(17 Mar '11, 00:32) moltenmike moltenmike's gravatar image

k, i deleted all that stuff but it still didnt work

(17 Mar '11, 00:36) moltenmike moltenmike's gravatar image

Ok, search on here for DFU, and try all the various suggestions for getting into DFU mode. If you still can't do it after that, post a new question on here.

(17 Mar '11, 00:38) Endareth Endareth's gravatar image

should i run as administrator

(17 Mar '11, 00:39) moltenmike moltenmike's gravatar image

Shouldn't need to, but it won't harm it, so yes, just to rule it out.

(17 Mar '11, 00:41) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

i just tried it again and it said the same thing "please power off your device and connect it to begin" then i can select "try again". this is what it has been saying the whole time

(17 Mar '11, 00:45) moltenmike moltenmike's gravatar image

Forget GP, just go to and try that with iTunes first.

(17 Mar '11, 00:47) Endareth Endareth's gravatar image

nope, that didnt work

(17 Mar '11, 00:56) moltenmike moltenmike's gravatar image

the recovery mode thing didnt come up

(17 Mar '11, 00:57) moltenmike moltenmike's gravatar image

looks like you updated to 4.3 by mistake.

That's what I thought, but we've ruled that out. In any case, no matter what iOS he's running, iTunes should see his device in dfu (provided he's actually in dfu of course).

It looks like you have a driver issue recognizing the device in DFU mode, connect your device to the computer and put it in DFU mode (Check this good YouTube for entering DFU just skip the sarcastic detailed language by @KOI2281) then go to the Device Manager, select the detected device and update the driver pointin it to the following location for drivers:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers\

Then once installed, the DFU should be recognized and greenpois0n will detect it and jailbreak it.
