How to fix some mysterious problems.

I have an unlocked iphone 3gs running 4.0.1, unlocked with and ultrasn0w. If I update to 4.2.1, is it possible to jailbreak with greenpoison rc6 and then unlock it with ultrasn0w 1.2? does greenpoison rc6 upgrade the baseband or will it stay the same?

GP doesn't do anything to the baseband. Do you have your 4.2.1 SHSH's saved? If not, you can't go to 4.2.1 you'll be forced to 4.3 by iTunes.

btw, the other question you closed was not the same, it regarded a 5.15.04 baseband iphone

If you ran TinyUmbrella between the release of 4.2.1 and today, you'd have your 4.2.1 SHSH's. It doesn't matter what firmware you're running, it's what firmware Apple is signing at the moment you run TU. Just run TinyUmbrella and see what it says, you could be lucky. EDIT: Seems I was wrong on that. I just did a test with TinyUmbrella, while running 4.2.1 on my iPod, and it refused to get any SHSH's at all, even though Apple is obviously signing 4.3 now.

i guess i'm one day late then. oh well. should i get my SHSH for 4.3 just in case?

(11 Mar '11, 21:05) edoz edoz's gravatar image

In that case stick with 4.0.1, 4.3 will be jailbroken eventually. Save your SHSH's now though, so you're not in this situation again.

Sorry about that other question, I was reading too fast and it looked like the same phone. It won't let me "un"-close it, so just ask it again.

is there anyway to know which shsh i have saved? because i remember doing something with shsh on cydia when i first jailbroke my phone (that "make my life easier" thing, which should be related to shsh if im not wrong)

(11 Mar '11, 21:13) edoz edoz's gravatar image

Yes that's your SHSH's. If you run TinyUmbrella ( it will tell you everything on the cydia server that you've saved. The Cydia homepage will also tell you, on the top line.

oh cool. thanks a lot! so yes i do have 4.2.1 saved. can i jailbreak with greenpoison and unlock with ultrasn0w then? just shift-restore 4.2.1 on itunes with tinyumbrella TSS started and then jailbreak/unlock?

(11 Mar '11, 21:22) edoz edoz's gravatar image

You can definitely jailbreak with GP if you go to 4.2.1, but I don't know much about unlocks, I've never owned an iPhone (just Pod/Pad). I'd wait until one of the phone experts responds, just to be safe; I'm surprised they haven't already.

(11 Mar '11, 22:09) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

ok. When I restore/update to the 4.2.1, itunes is not gonna update my baseband too, right?

(11 Mar '11, 22:16) edoz edoz's gravatar image

If you're running the TSS server from TU, it will preserve your baseband. I don't know if you can unlock though. Restore and update aren't interchangeable though, don't update! Shift-click restore in iTunes and choose your 4.2.1 ipsw while running TU's TSS server.

i don't know man, all guides on google say that tinyumbrella will preserve baseband only on iphone 4. yeah i just read more into that, tinyumbrella only preserves the baseband for iphone 4. luckily i didn't restore yet :)

(11 Mar '11, 22:38) edoz edoz's gravatar image

No. Disregard that last statement and wait until one of the phone experts responds, it's above my pay grade. ;) Better safe than sorry.

(11 Mar '11, 22:44) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

I guess it depends on what baseband comes with the iPhone 3GS 4.2.1 firmware. It may be the same as what you have, I haven't a clue.

(11 Mar '11, 22:47) spockers ♦♦ spockers's gravatar image

I finally got it. I have to use SnowBreeze (on windows) or Pwnage tool (mac) to upgrade to 4.2.1 while preserving baseband, just like the home-page of iphone-dev-team blog states. was under my nose the whole time, only now i got it lol

I was thinking sn0wbreeze would do it, just didn't want to steer you wrong. Good luck, post back with what happens.
