How to jailbreak untethered iOS 7.1, 7.1.1, or 7.1.2 on all devices (except Apple TV 2/3) using Pangu.

  • Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed (it includes drivers that help your computer communicate with your device).
  • Plug your device into your computer.
  • Open iTunes, click your device (in the sidebar or at the top-right if you have the sidebar disabled) choose "Back Up Now." If the jailbreak process fails, you can restore your data from this backup.
  • If your device is locked with a passcode, you must temporarily disable it. Open the Settings app and navigate to Passcode. Enter your passcode, then tap "Turn Passcode Off."
  • Your iTunes backup password must also be disabled. In iTunes, click your device and then untick encrypt Local Backup." Enter your password, then allow iTunes to backup your device again. If this option is greyed out: On the device, open Settings, tap General, tap Profiles and remove all entries there.
  • Go to http://en.pangu.io/ and download Pangu by clicking on the button for your operating system.
  • Close iTunes, then open the Pangu app. For best results, ensure your device is showing the home screen and no other apps are open.
  • Click the black box. This process will take a while, so give it a few minutes and try not to do anything that could interfere.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions. The app will ask you at one point to set your device to June 2nd. To do this, go to Settings -> General -> Date & Time. You don't need to pick a specific time - any time on June 2nd is fine.
  • Tap the Pangu app icon on the home screen once it appears.
  • Wait for your device to reboot several times. After a few minutes you should see that you have Cydia on your home screen and you’ll be ready to start installing tweaks on iOS 7.1.x.

Pangu issues and possible fixes:

  • Pangu is unresponsive in the process, or the Cydia icon fails to appear after tapping the Pangu icon on Springboard.

    • Quit the Pangu application and try again. If same issue occurs, backup data in iTunes, restore iOS, restore your backup, and run Pangu again.
  • Cydia icon disappears after a restore from iTunes backup.

    • Back up data in iTunes, restore iOS, and restore the backup first before jailbreaking with Pangu.
  • All apps disappear after jailbreaking.

    • Try waiting a while and see if they reappear. If they do not, install MobileTerminal or use OpenSSH and run the command “uicache” (without quotes). This should reload the com.apple.mobile.installation.plist to fix the icons. And if for some reason "uicache" doesn’t work, you can always delete: /var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServces-056.csstore and /var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist. That should always solve the problem, although it messes up your icon layout.
  • The device filesystem is not accessible from iFunbox or other USB browsers.

    • As of Pangu 1.2.0, afc2add is automatically installed.
    • If you jailbroke using an older version of Pangu, you can install Apple File Conduit "2" from Cydia/Telesphoreo (a default repository) in Cydia. This will enable your filesystem to be accessed via USB. Note however that there are some security risks in installing this package.

How to jailbreak untethered iOS 7.0-7.0.6 on all devices (except Apple TV 2/3) using evasi0n7.

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed (it includes drivers that help your computer communicate with your device).
  2. Plug your device into your computer.
  3. Open iTunes, click your device (in the sidebar or at the top-right if you have the sidebar disabled) choose "Back Up Now." If the jailbreak process fails, you can restore your data from this backup.
  4. If your device is locked with a passcode, you must temporarily disable it. Open the Settings app, navigate to General and then Passcode Lock. Enter your passcode, then tap "Turn Passcode Off."
  5. Your iTunes backup password must also be disabled. In iTunes, click your device and then untick encrypt Local Backup." Enter your password, then allow iTunes to backup your device again. If this option is greyed out: On the device, open Settings, tap General, tap Profiles and remove all entries there.
  6. Go to evasi0n.com and download evasi0n7 by clicking on the blue button for your operating system.
  7. Close iTunes, then open the evasi0n7 app. For best results, ensure your device is showing the home screen and no other apps are open.
  8. Click Jailbreak. This process will take a while, so give it a few minutes and try not to do anything that could interfere.
  9. Follow the instructions from the evasi0n7 app.
  10. After the jailbreak completes, Cydia will appear on your home screen. Open it and wait for it to configure the filesystem. Your device will respring.
  11. Now, open Cydia again, and wait for Cydia to refresh your package lists/sources. A "Reloading Data" box will appear at the end and then it will disappear.
  12. You can now install any tweak that is compatible for iOS 7.0.x (and is 64-bit compatible if you have an iPhone 5s, iPad Air, or iPad mini Retina); here is a convenient list of what works (and what doesn't work).
  13. Don't forget to re-enable device and backup passwords if you disabled them.

evasi0n7 issues and possible fixes:

  • After jailbreaking using evasi0n7 v1.0.6, packages in Cydia are not the latest versions (Cydia Substrate 0.9.5000 instead of latest 0.9.5001) or some packages and/or dependencies will not appear at all (Flipswitch). This issue ONLY occurs on initial Cydia launch of devices jailbroken using evasi0n7 v1.0.6 and has been fixed in evasi0n7 v1.0.7.
    • This is caused by a Cydia cache bug which makes Cydia load packages from an earlier date.
    • Fix: Clear Cydia cache by installing and running iCleaner with all 3 Cydia toggles enabled.
    • Alternate Fix: Use an iOS content browser to delete everything in the /var/lib/apt/lists folder EXCEPT the partial folder. After clearing the cache, make sure to click Refresh in the Cydia Changes tab to allow Cydia to load the latest packages.
  • Jailbreaking with evasi0n7 might cause your device to go into a reboot loop or leave your device stuck on the Apple logo screen.

    • Backup your device in iTunes BEFORE you attempt to jailbreak, just in case this happens to you.
    • Restore the firmware of your device in iTunes and restore your iTunes or iCloud backup. Doing this will update your firmware to the latest version (iOS 7.1.2), which can be jailbroken untethered using Pangu (see above). You might need to put your device into DFU mode to restore it: with your device connected to your computer, hold the power (lock) button and home button for 10 seconds, then release the power button but keep holding the home button for another 15 seconds. iTunes should then recognize your device and allow you to restore it.
  • Devices that were OTA updated to 7.x will not jailbreak in most cases.

    • When attempting to jailbreak a device that was updated OTA, it will normally fail at "modifying rootfs." You can try jailbreaking your OTA updated device using evasi0n7 but there is a strong possibility it will fail. Just make sure you backup your data via iTunes before you attempt to jailbreak, as if the jailbreak fails, you will have to restore to iOS 7.1.2, which can be jailbroken untethered using Pangu (see above).
  • evasi0n7 will not open on OS X 10.6.8, and might not open on OS X 10.8.x/10.9.x for some users.

    • evasi0n7 does not work on OS X 10.6.8. To be able to jailbreak, use a Mac on 10.7 or later or a Windows computer on XP or later. If that doesn't help, try another computer.
    • If you get an error on OS X 10.8.x or 10.9.x saying that evasi0n7 can't be opened, control-click (or right-click) the app and on the revealed context menu, choose 'Open.' On the ensuing dialogue box, choose 'Open' as well.
  • evasi0n7 might get stuck at the "Configuring System 2/2" stage.

    • This might happen when jailbreaking using a slow computer. Try jailbreaking using a different computer (hopefully a faster one). If access is not available to a faster computer, sometimes closing any background programs before running evasi0n7 might help. If all else fails, sometimes a little patience can help too, as it may take more than one attempt to successfully pass this step.
  • evasi0n7 might give you this error: "Failed to retrieve package info from the internet."

    • The issue can be fixed using a VPN like this. After installing & enabling the VPN, run the evasi0n7 jailbreak again.
  • evasi0n7 might get stuck at some other stage in the jailbreaking process.

    • If the jailbreak already installed the evasi0n7 app on the iDevice, delete it (by long-holding on its icon and pressing the little "x" in the top-left corner of the icon), and then try again. You might need to do this several times to get it to work.
  • The device filesystem is not accessible from iFunbox or other USB browsers.

    • Install Apple File Conduit "2" from Cydia/Telesphoreo (a default repository) in Cydia. This will enable your filesystem to be accessed via USB. Note however that there are some security risks in installing this package.
  • The status bar might not change colors or might overlap certain parts of the user interface in stock apps.

    • This is a bug caused by Cydia 1.1.9. It was fixed in Cydia 1.1.10 and later. Make sure you are using the latest version by refreshing your sources and updating all relevant packages.
