Question

so i just tried to run greepois0n on my phone, and when trying to set phone to DFU mode, it just showed the apple for turning it on. then the screen went black, and now the phone wont turn on at all. did i brick my phone?

To get back, hold the power button and the home button until the Apple logo appears. Then, after the reboot, try getting again into DFU mode. If everything fails, do a restore and jailbreak with the most stable JB: PwnAge Tool (Mac) or Sn0wBreeze (Win). But verify if you are really on DFU by opening iTunes and checking if your device is on Recovery Mode (a message box will appear)

No, that sounds like DFU mode. In DFU the screen is black. Re-run GP and see if it shows the jailbreak button.

all it says is 'prepare to jailbreak' and below that is 'waiting for DFU' am i missing something completely? should i maybe try and use a different jailbreak program?

Follow the instructions to get into DFU mode. The timing can be a little tricky, just keep trying, it should recognize when it's in DFU. There are other jailbreaks, but they all require getting into DFU mode, at least.
