How to fix some mysterious problems.

I need your unlocking iPhone genius expertise. Please read. I have an Ultrasn0w unlocked iPhone 3G from U.S. I live in U.A.E. now. It's on 4.0.2 (8A400), baseband 05.13.04. It is DREADFULLY slow.

I want to put 4.2.1 on by using Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 and having to update my baseband to 06.15.00 (iPad).

My worry is this from Sept. 24, 2010: "We’ve released a beta version of redsn0w for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at FW 4.1 or 4.0. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g. Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.

IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. DO NOT USE REDSN0W. That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possibly forever)."

That part about losing my unlock, possibly forever, worries me as this is my primary phone and I can't lose the unlock. Has Redsn0w/Ultrasn0w compensated since in these six months to upgrade my iPhone 3G to 4.2.1 locked, then Resn0w jailbreak and then Ultrasn0w to unlock?

I'm a longtime, loyal Apple fan, I just haven't kept up every month with all the updates/changes/abilities.

If you want a fast iOS, downgrade to 3.1.3.

To keep unlock, make sure never to upgrade your baseband. Do not install baseband 6.15.

That warning was that when you officially install 4.1, it upgrades the baseband, and you lose unlock. So don't install 4.1 or 4.2.1 without protecting baseband.

You can install 4.2.1 by using a custom firmware, created with PwnageTool (Mac) or sn0wbreeze (Windows). This avoids upgrading the baseband. You can use redsn0w to jailbreak and install Cydia, but usually you only need that if you already installed the firmware (and lost your unlock before).

Don't use Redsn0w as it requires you to be already running the 4.2.1 firmware, but you have no need to go to the ipad baseband, so use either Sn0wbreeze (Win) or Pwnage (Mac) to create a custom 4.2.1 ipsw that preserves your current baseband, and so keeping you unlocked, and restore to that. There are some disagreements in jailbreak world that the iphone 3g just cant handle ios4 (laggy), that's a decision for you to make, coz you can always go back to 3.1.3 using the shift/alt - restore method and then jailbreak/unlock, your current baseband will go with you.

Just don't restore/update to stock 4.2.1 via itunes or else you will be heading toward the ipad baseband as you will get the 5.15.xx baseband which can't be unlocked and the only way is up.

Yes much have been released in the last six months. DO NOT update to ipad baseband! Because you don't need to! You can simply upgrade to 4.2.1 without upgrading baseband so that it can still be unlocked. To do that you need to run snowbreeze 2.2.1 if you're on windows and use it to create a custom firmware for your 3G, then follow the steps in the tool to upgrade to 4.2.1. When the process completes your iphone should already be jailbroken (unless you've selected baseband preservation mode), so just install ultrasnow again for unlock!

4.2.1 is quite an improvement for 3G but 3.1.3-level of smoothness is impossible. In snowbreeze you can even opt to enable multi-task, battery percentage, and user background should you want to but they slow down your phone, especially the multi-tasking option.

I didn't know that PwnageTool could retain the baseband and that the unlock would remain as well! That is fantastic! After reading your excellent answers, I attempted the upgrade and WAS SUCCESSFUL!! The unlock remained. I didn't know if iTunes should restore to my backup, so I took a chance and tried it and voila! All of my apps, photos, email accts., prefs. was back the way I remembered. Amazing. The only difference is the pineapple for the startup logo and I noticed Game wasn't there. Thought this would come with 4.2.1 by default. Then I did a bit of reading and getting Game Center on seems a bit too much work for the value for me at this time. Maybe in a few weeks. Thank you all for taking time to clear me up, keep my baseband and make me a happy iPhone 3G on 4.2.1, unlocked camper once again!

Just jailbreak with PwnAge or Sn0wbreeze (now untethered), and it's the best jailbreak. But it requres a full system restore.

OP - a couple of things, I'll take a punt that you used Pwnage in 'simple' mode, if you don't want to have the custom boot logos, pwnapple/steve jobs, then build a new custom 4.2.1 in 'expert' mode and deselect them and alt/restore to that, this will leave you with the stock ones....also in 'expert' mode, if you have a at&t sim for activation deselect 'activate the iphone', I guess you have hacktivated (simple mode default) and needed to do so, so you may want to look at installing SAM/preferences, for push applications and better battery life .If you need to restore for any reason, make sure you don't restore to stock firmware as you will update that baseband, just keep restoring to custom 4.2.1 ipsw's, you wont have to worry about accidentally upgrading to 4.3 as 4.2.1 is the end of the road for the iphone 3G, and as you are now probably aware, gamecenter isn't supported by the 3G, maybe some hack out there, via cydia or otherwise that will enable it.
