How to fix some mysterious problems.

Okkkkk, I been on this for a week and it's driving me nuts. I'm helping a friend of mine jailbreak and unlock an iphone 3gs. The phone was upgraded to 4.2.1 with bb 6.15. Here's the steps I did so far:

  • Downloaded the restore ipsw file
  • Downloaded the custom ipsw file
  • Put the phone into dfu mode with redsn0w
  • Restore the iphone with the custom ipsw file. After restoring the custom firmware, I get the no sim card and emergency calls only
  • Launched greenpois0n rc6.1 and jailbreak the phone. I get the iphone stuck on the itunes logo and cable after that.
  • Ran redsn0w and installed cydia and ipad baseband. After this the phone works, i can connect to my network and updates and run cydia but with no service showing.
  • Ran cydia and installed Sam and Sam Prefs, rebooted the phone
  • Ran redsn0w and chose the deactivate option only. Phone rebooted
  • I didn't know what to do with SAM. All the options mentioned online were not present on the screen
  • Ran cydia and installed ultrasn0w, rebooted phone
  • Put my t-mobile sim, I still get no service but everything else works
  • I have reseted network settings, rebooted the phone many times, turned off 3G and every suggestion i read online about this

I'm out of option, if anyone can help me please reply. Thanks.

A few mistakes:

Always create the custom firmware (cfw) yourself, never download it from somewhere. You can use PwnageTool (Mac) or sn0wbreeze (Windows).

If you have original SIM card, activate after restoring cfw normally in iTunes. If you don't have original SIM, create cfw with hacktivation option. Then after restore unstall ultrasn0w, then deaktivate with SAM, then activate with iTunes.

Point 3 DFU: you meant pwning device, right? To install cfw, you have to pwn device first.

Thank you for your help,

I did try snowbreeze but I got an error when I tried to restore with iTunes. I think it was error 1600. I will try it again though.

What I meant by DFU is when I press the power and the home button then release the power after a couple of seconds to enter the recovery mode.

I have a couple of questions. - When i open sam i don't have an option to deactivate. I have a utilities and then an option to hacktivate but it says the phone is already activate.

  • How do I activate with iTunes?

Error 1600 is easy to fix. Just get TinyUmbrella (http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/), run it, click Start TSS server. Leave it running and start the restore, it should work. As for the activation, I'll leave that for the people who have iPhones to answer ;)

So you are saying, I should use sn0wbreeze to create my own cfw with hacktivation. Then I restore it with iTunes. After restoring with iTunes install ultrasn0w, sam and sam prefs then deactivate with SAM, then activate with iTunes.

Ok. I used sn0wbreeze and I created a cfw. Pawned the phone and then did the restore. The phone turned on.

I installed ultrasn0w then sam and sam prefs. when I open sam I get the hacktivate option is off and a message "Your iPhone is currently Factory Activated - this means youu are hacktivated. Until you are not hacktivated your iphone cannot be activated so SAM is disabled. Please try to revert lockdownd and disable hacktivate"

I inserted my sim but still no service. What did I do wrong?
