How to fix some mysterious problems.

Hi there., I'vs been having trouble jailbreaking my iphone4. I'm not really into terms with jailbreaking and I seem to be lost while using Greenpoison. My IOS is 4.2.1 and I've had difficulty in the past because whenever I get to turn off my Iphone it would need to be boot tathered (I think its redsnow jailbreak), sorry if I'm missing out on the terms here. Can anyone help me? So heres what happens to me.. I turned off my phone. Connected it to the USB. Started Greenpoison and then I follow the instructions precisely but it failed on me. I got the message "try again" haha. Now, I don't know if what I'm doing is right. Heck, I can't even determine if my phone is off or is just in sleep mode. Is there a proper way of doing the shutdown co'z I can't boot my phone right now because of the boot tathered thing. Anyway, I'd really love some advice here. Am I missing something? Thank you!

Ideally you should connect to USB and then turn it off by holding sleep button until "slide to power off" comes up, and slide it. Since we don't know if your phone is off or in sleep mode or in dfu mode, you need to boot tethered with redsnow, leave it connected, turn it off, then run greenpois0n.

I've never pre- turned off any of the idevices I have jailbroken with Greenpois0n, the process of DFU has been started with the idevice(s) on and never had a problem.

I always turn mine off, but if it works, it works. The main reason I tell people to turn it completely off is just to get them to a known state before jailbreaking. Off is off, but a black screen could be sleep, off or dfu.

I do it from springboard

Also, in the OP's case, having jailbroken tethered already with redsn0w, it's easier to get the timing right for dfu if they start from powered off, especially being unfamiliar with jailbreaking. That's my thinking anyway...

Yeah I guess that would work just as well.
