How to fix some mysterious problems.

Downloaded and running GP RC6.1 on iPhone 3GS v4.2.1.

During process, after text based DFU "bootup" text has scrolled on the screen the process gets stuck saying "Unable to download firmware after 60000 msec". I noticed 10 or so lines previously that the WLAN had been activated.

Does the GP RC6.1 process require access to an unprotected/no-password WLAN in order to obtain a firmware file to complete this process?

So far the current version of limera1n and GP RC6.1 are unable to JB my phone. It was JB with limera1n running iOS 4.1 prior to my upgrading to iOS 4.2.1. After upgrade limera1n and Cydia were gone which I kind of expected.

GP downloads the payload for the jailbreak from the internet, but it does this on your computer, not on your iDevice, so no, you don't need to open up your router.

Well repeated attempts failed until I unlocked my router and broadcast SSID. After that GP 6.1 worked perfectly. So I guess unlocked access to a WLAN is required.

I've never unlocked my router, and I've used GP successfully several times. I think that was probably a coincidence of timing on your end.

Broadcasting SSID is not the same as removing password protection, it just makes your network show up in devices wireless search lists so they can select to join your network, dependent on password requirement of course.

I think by 'unlocked' he meant disabled wireless security.

As long as the idevice is connected to the network beforehand via password verification then no need to disable wireless security. Maybe OP went into the router and enabled 'wireless access point' lol

GP downloads via wireless on the iDevice? I wiped my ipod before running GP, so there's no way it could have connected wirelessly. Doesn't make sense to me, as it worked. Also after jailbreaking, before downloading cydia, i had to setup wireless and enter the password on my ipod.

It's possible I'm remembering it wrong, so now 'I gots to know' ;) I'm going to reset my iPod's network settings and run GP again to see what happens.

No, don't do it lol, my bad. I did actually mean the computer it's connected to has to be connected to the router, in this case wirelessly. Got the word idevice on the brain.

Too late ;) I had to have a definitive answer anyway, and now I do. It worked, without wireless access, so now we know for sure.

Thanks. I get a bit obsessed with finding an answer to anything tech-related, luckily this one was fairly simple and I had the hardware on-hand. ;)

Before you JB with Greenp0ison go to settings and set up your wireless. That way after you run the JB you wont run into problems. I had the same thing happen to my 3GS before I sold it.
