How to fix some mysterious problems.

There's a lot of dust under my screen so I called the Apple Customer Care and it's covered by my warranty. But, it's unlocked with the 06.15.00 iPad baseband. I know it's not possible to downgrade this baseband yet, but I need to get my iPhone restored by friday.

So how can I restore my iPhone 3G[s], iOS 4.2.1, greenpois0n RC6, 06.15.00 baseband ? BTW, I do not care of loosing anything in my iPhone including the unlock.

Thanks a lot - - Defenc3

The following is direct excerpt from the Dev-Teams blog.

  1. There is no way to come back down from 06.15, and there’s no hiding the baseband version from Apple. You’ll be voiding your warranty in a very obvious way.
  2. If some future baseband comes out with a critical fix, you won’t be able to update to it if it remains down in the 05.xx sequence (then again, you wouldn’t update to it if you wanted to keep your unlock anyway).
  3. Starting with FW 4.2.1 if you have 06.15 on your iPhone you won’t ever be able to restore to stock firmware (it will fail). You’ll need to only restore to custom IPSWs (then again, if you’re unlocker you should already be doing that).

Your only option is to restore using custom firmware and hope that your Apple doesn't check the baseband version.

Yup, that's the bit I was thinking of.

Use Sn0wbreeze or PwnageTool to create one, then Shift/Option click on Restore in iTunes, it'll let you select the IPSW to restore to.

Ok thanks guy I'll try that.

I don't think it's possible to downgrade the baseband from that iPad version (I seem to recall various warnings about this).

However as your warranty is just for something physical, they may simply give you a replacement without looking at the software/firmware.

Alternately, it's possible that 4.3 (when it arrives) might update the bb, but there's no info on when this will happen.

If you're going to gamble, try to create a custom 4.2.1 firmware that doesn't include Cydia, and cross your fingers!

you cant update unless you are using a custom firmware once you update to this baseband theres no turning back you can use either pwange tool or sn0wbreeze to make a custom ipsw but never let itunes restore your device it doesnt matter if you are upgrading to 4.2.1
