How to fix some mysterious problems.

I'm currently looking at picking up a cheap iPod Touch as an adjunct to my iPhone 4, just for development/testing/general backup, and as I've never really looked at iPod Touches before, I thought I'd ask some questions and get some feedback on here.

I'm quite happy to pick up an older second-hand model, and not fussed about its capacity, but I need to know what restrictions I'm going to hit.

Specifically, I'm after a device that is able to be jailbroken on 4.2.1 (preferably by all methods), and supports as many of the current iOS features as possible (especially AirPlay, and preferably Game Center).

I got a 3g for my birthday (Aug 19), jailbroke it with no issues, then a couple weeks later the 4g came out. Since it came from Best Buy and they have a 30-day return policy, I took the 3g back, coughed up 50 bucks or so, and got the 4g. I really wanted the cameras. ;)

Since you have an iPhone 4, with a higher-res camera than the 4g touch, there's really only one difference you need to consider: Pixel density. I thought the 3g's screen looked great, but that was before I got the 4g. The difference is pretty significant, and I don't think it's even 'retina' like the iPhone, but you might want to give them both a good look before you decide. If you don't care about the bells and whistles, the 3g would probably be a good choice

Ok, sounds like either a 3G or 4G are my options. I don't actually need a retina screen or front camera, so I'll probably just get the cheapest I can pick up (presumably a 3G). Thanks all for your input!

third or fourth gen are a strong choice. Depending on how long you wish to keep it, I'd go with a 4th if you are wanting to use it for a while, 3rd if you just want to dump it when the next 5th then comes around.

As long as the 3G is going to keep getting updates for at least the next year, I'll prob just go with one of those as a cheap option, assuming no jb related probs.

iPod Touch 4G has cameras and facetime is very useful, this is the major +

Gotta be a 3rd or 4th gen as they are the only ones getting further firmware updates

Ok, so what's the latest fw for 1G/2G?

(23 Feb '11, 20:15) Endareth Endareth's gravatar image

For the 1g (my dad has one) it's 3.1.2, and it doesn't even have a speaker. No clue about the 2g.

Wait until the 5G. The 2G is on its last firmware update now, and no point in getting anything less than a 4G
