It's been used successfully multiple millions of times, and the files linked from the Evasi0n.com site are known to be safe. Feel free to try clicking some of the blue links above your question to read more before jumping into it, though.

Evasi0n shall NOT do ANY harm to your computer.

iOS (6.x or any version) will run on iOS devices, iPods, iPads and iPhones, but NOT on a windows computer.

Here are the steps you want to follow:

  1. Download and install on your computer latest version of iTunes;
  2. Download and install on your computer latest version of evasi0n;
  3. Plug your iDevice to your computer, let iTunes backup sync and update;
  4. Under Windows, temporary disable any AntiVirus/FireWall you might be running;
  5. Disable the lock password of your iDevice if you have one;
  6. Disable your iTunes' backup password if you have one;
  7. Under Windows, run evasi0n as admin (right-click and choose Run as Administrator);
  8. Let it do it's things and follow the instructions;
  9. Follow the further instructions on your iDevice until the process completes.
  10. Restore your backup from iTunes;
  11. Start using Cydia and enjoy your newly JB iDevice.
