-it is a itouch 3rd gen and its running the new update. so i'm on 4.2.1

Have you installed the latest iTunes? You need that because it installs the drivers necessary for Windows to recognize an idevice in dfu mode. Is it (iTunes) running? It shouldn't be. Also, GP needs an active, non-firewalled internet connection.

You kept holding the home button after the last step in dfu mode and when you clicked jailbreak right?

From what you're describing, you are doing things in the right way (entering DFU correctly), however for some reason GP is failing after that, if you have unfiltered internet access (firewall off, no proxies, no blocked sites) then the reason is most probably related to the Apple drivers for the DFU mode devices, for this you can try any of the following:

  • Try on another USB port
  • Try on another computer with installed iTunes (the latest is 10.1.2 and is jailbreak safe)
  • Try removing iTunes and reinstallaing from scratch, proper details are here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925 note the order of items to remove before reinstalling, these should removed in the following order:

1.iTunes

2.QuickTime

3.Apple Software Update

4.Apple Mobile Device Support

5.Bonjour

6.Apple Application Support

After your description of what you've tried, I'd be trying on a different computer, or using a different jailbreak method.
