If it has baseband 6.15.00 or 5.13.04 (or lower), it needs a custom firmware. Create it with sn0wbreeze or PwnageTool, pwn device with redsn0w, then install cfw with iTunes.

Otherwise you can clear hosts file, restore stock 4.2.1, then jb with gp rc6.1

Here comes alot of information for you, all good,

If itunes wont recognise it in it's current state you can press and hold both buttons and get the thing switched off, release the buttons before it reboots then you can restore it again in recovery mode, by leaving it off and then connecting to itunes while pressing/holding the home button until itunes picks it up, then restore.

You should download TinyUmbrella (Google it) and connect your 3Gs, hopefully it gets recognised in its current state (if not restore), if so click on your 3Gs in the left pane and then click on the 'general' tab and look down to 'Installed baseband version', but if you've restored twice to stock 4.2.1 using itunes then you can't have the ipad baseband. While you're there hit 'save shsh' and watch the log and see what you get.

You can click here http://gs.apple.com or paste to your browser anytime to see where your hosts file is pointing, if it goes to Apple 404 then it's pointing at Apple, if it goes to Cydia page then it's pointing at Cydia, you can easy change it from one to the other using TinyUmbrella, 'advanced' tab and check/uncheck 'set hosts to cydia on exit' and apply changes, but again if you've restored twice using itunes then it's probably pointing at Apple.

Maybe look at the other jailbreak tools available, sn0wbreeze (Win), Pwnage (Mac only) and try those, If your 3Gs is old bootrom you could use Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 (Mac & Win) for an untethered jailbreak.
