How to fix some mysterious problems.

I know that to change SMS tones, they have to be named as they were in the UISounds folder to work: sms-received1.caf

I did try deleting some of the "new" sounds like Anticipate.caf; but it still shows up even after rebooting under text tones; with no sound. I figure there's a database somewhere that references these.

Anyone tried playing around with text tones any more than replacing the sms-received files with renamed aif files?

The closest I have gone with Custom SMS is replacing an existing caf. Then in the menu, use the original name.

yeah, me too. I'd love to be able to tweak the names though....

This may work:

  1. SSH into Applications/
  2. Take that Sounds.strings and save it to your comp
  3. Convert that file here:
  4. Open that file with notepad
  5. Rename the SMS names. You'll see the original names (Bell, Horn, etc.) near ALTERNATE
  6. Copy that converted file back into the original location on the phone. If, when you converted the file, you changed the name, then just rename it 'Sounds.strings' (minus the quotation marks).
  7. Restart the phone.
