How to fix some mysterious problems.

I have been trying for the last few weeks to jailbreak an iPhone 3G, and I cannot, for the life of me, get it behave. I'm starting to thing it is hopeless.

Everytime I restore, the iPhone gets to the point where it reboots, does the apple logo + spinning circle, then it reboots again in recovery mode and theres nothing I can do after that.

Please help!

Note: Just tried again after restoring to the official 3.1.3 firmware (where it's sitting right now). Every time I enter DFU, start iReb (it won't get past the error 1600 without iReb) and shift-restore in iTunes, it does the same thing. Restart iPhone, spin, reboot to recovery screen.

I'm only trying it in DFU. I have the stock 3.1.3 installed right now. I was able to restore to that without any problems.

I'm attempting to upgrade to 4.2.1 with a hactivated/custom FW right now.

Yeah, you can restore to ios3 firmware on a 3G without the need for shsh's, in ios4 you need shsh's apart from 4.2.1 of course which I imagine will be signed by Apple for ever.

Whats your baseband version and OS type

If you get error 1600 you probably wanted to install custom firmware and forgot to pwn your device. Is that the case? I would recommend to install stock firmware and not jailbreak it to see if this resolves the problems. If you have baseband 6.15 installed, you cannot install stock firmware anymore, so you need custom. Make sure you create it yourself.

So I finally resolved this issue. Used redsn0w 0.9.2 with ipsw for 3.1.2 and it's working great. Now I wonder if I even bother trying to upgrade :/
