Try using the AssistiveTouch so you can access the home button use from your screen. Its in Settings>General> Accessibility.

Home button on my iPhone 4 is also not responsive some time....what I m doing, using activator and Zephyr for multitasking. If it works besides making calls....then it's maybe not a hardware issue.

yea i dont think its a hardware issue. i enjoy the home button and dont want to substitute it with something else. What can be causing this?

Proximity sensor.

yea but why would it be detecting when im not on it. im trying to go to my home screen during a call and its not doing anything. its sucks when i have an imcoming call or a text i want to check or something

I'm saying the proximity sensor thinks something solid (presumably your face but it could be anything opaque) is nearby when it shouldn't. I'm not sure how the mechanism works, but if it's optical then it's possible that there's debris or dirt covering the sensor. Give the front of the phone a good wipedown.

Nevermind, that can't be it. I just tested that on mine, and with the phone up to my head and the screen black, pressing home turns the screen on. I don't know what to tell ya.

Lots of ppl with iPhone 4 have trouble with the proximity sensor. Take a look at google you will see thread after thread. I've seen some ppl saying there is a way to half ass calibrate it or trick it. I don't know if that was BS or not.
