How to fix some mysterious problems.

I am going to start using my old iPhone 3g again and it's still on firmware 2.2 or something like that. So I am going to format it and update it, but I want to know which program to use after that so I can safely jailbreak and keep all functions running normal.

Reading all these posts with all these numbers and acronyms and random names has me confused, for example the version numbers and tethered/untethered, baseband, I dont know what any of that means.

I just want to know the name of what program(s) I need to simply jailbreak.

I remember I jailbroke it a long time ago and all these acronyms and words and stuff now are making it sound a lot more confusing and hard than it is.

Before you go to 4.2.1, do you require unlock for service?, if not just update via itunes and use either Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 (Mac & Win) or PwnageTool (Mac only) or Sn0wbreeze (Win) to jailbreak.

I personally would use Redsn0w for an untethered jailbreak, it does require you to browse to and select a copy of the 4.2.1 firmware (just like the other tools will), which you will have just downloaded from updating via itunes, you just need to know the location for your OS

The choice is yours, I personally have no experience of Sn0wbreeze as I'm a long time Mac user, thats why I recommend Redsn0w, I'm sure it runs on windows as good as it does on OSX, but either will give you an untethered jailbreak, you don't really need to concern yourself with that now, it just means you can turn it off and on without the need for the jailbreak tool as opposed to tethered where you'd need to use the jailbreak tool to start it up everytime after turning it off.

You can't use Greenpois0n as the iphone 3G is not supported

Redsn0w has a long history so the latest version is numbered 0.9.6 the rc8 part is just the 8th improved revision for bug fixes/improvements of original 0.9.6

No I am using it under contract (it's doesnt need to be unlocked). I am using windows XP. Should I use Redsnow 0.9 6rc8 or Sn0wbreeze.

As I mentioned I do not know what tethered/untethered means. And why is the redsn0w version # so confusing :P What is the whole 6rc8 thing.

So Redsnow or snowbreeze?
