is there any need to preserve baseband. its the first time i m going to jailbreak . i have 5.1.1 in my 3gs. kindly tell me. wt shud i have to do. thanks

It depends on wether your iPhone is factory unlocked or not. There's no problem on updating to new software if your iPhone is Factory unlocked. In the other hand, if your iPhone is not factory unlocked which means that you may be using specific software to unlock your phone like ultrasn0w then u should preserve baseband in order to unlock again through ultrasn0w after updating. ultrasn0w is now updated to run on IOS 6 so if you need it be sure to check your iPhone baseband is on the requirements of the software. Point your IPSW to 6.0 and not 6.1 and it should go through

Ok, recovery fix went through all right but now evasi0n won't work since the device is not activated. I have the SAM trick activation ticket stored but how can I get them in before the device is jailbroken?

<rant> Why oh why can't this be all redsnow -supported as earlier? Jailbroken for life it said for this old-bootrom mode... Still quite hard :( </rant>

Use tethered jailbreak by redsn0w. Activate iPhone with SAM trick. Go to Cydia and Search for evasi0n 6.x Untether. Install and reboot. This should work.

You need select 6.0 firmware by clicking extras -> select IPSW. After that jailbreak your iPhone and do the following steps.

It's so much easier to use Sn0wbreeze for 3GS devices. All you need to d/l is Sn0wbreeze 2.99 and the current IOS 6.1 IPSW. Fire up Sn0wbreeze, it will ask what IPSW you want to use, and you select the 6.1 IPSW you downloaded. Then you select "Simple" mode. It will create a IOS 6.1 IPSW for you, already activated and jailbroken and will put on your desktop.

It will then give you step by step instructions to put your 3GS in "Pwned DFU" mode. Once this is done, you go to Itunes, hold the shift button and click "Restore". You find the IPSW that Sn0wbreeze put on your desktop and Itunes will use that file to update your 3GS to 6.1.

Once this is done, your 3GS is activated and has Cydia installed. All you have left to do is get Ultrasn0w from Cydia to unlock your phone (if your iphone is locked to a different carrier than what you want to use)

P.S. Remember to backup your iphone in Itunes and transfer all your apps before you begin.....Or you will have to start from scratch after the update.
