I have a iPhone 3GS with firmware 4.2.1 and bootrom 359.3.2. Is it possible to jailbreak and unlock this phone in untethered mode?

You can jailbreak your new bootrom 3Gs using any of the tools available & attain an untether, the unlock though is the issue here because if you have the 5.15.xx baseband then you can't unlock it or downgrade it, you can of course take the ipad baseband upgrade using Redsn0w/Pwnage and then unlock it, but be aware there are issues regarding the ipad baseband i.e. loss of GPS and warranty, so have a read up if you are considering that.

Read this article here

Personally, I suggest you wait until 4.3 JB+unlock is released which should be released soon.

Note that there is a big chance the unlock coming after 4.3 release will only address iPhone 4 basebands and not 3G/3GS basebands.

greenpois0n will give you an untethered jailbreak of all iPhone 3GS (both old and new bootroms).
