The IPhone ipsw is also different for each phone (3g, 3gs, 4). For the iPhone 3g, you need a file for iPhone 1,2. The easiest way to get this is to connect to iTunes and click iTunes>Check For Updates. You'll get a box saying there is updated software available. Make sure to click Download Only, and the file will be saved to your computer. On a Mac, it will be in /Users/HomeDir/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates. On a PC, it would be in Documents and Settings<User>Application DataApple ComputeriTunesiPhone Software Updates. It will download the appropriate 4.2.1 ipsw for your phone.
