Just looking for the correct ios update procedure for jailbroken iphone 4s on 5.1.1 to 6.1 for the imminent evasi0n jailbreak tool? If you could provide me with the correct update procedure would be most appreciated. Cheers Kennarded

Check out the evasi0n help page linked in the header here:

If your device is on an older iOS version, or if you want to be extra sure that the jailbreak will go smoothly, you can follow these steps:

  1. Make a backup with iTunes (click "Back Up Now" in iTunes).
  2. If your device is jailbroken, write down a list of your installed packages, because the next step (restoring) will remove the existing jailbreak. If not jailbroken, ignore this step.
  3. Restore the device with iTunes, which will update your device to the latest iOS version, currently iOS 6.1. (If you have an iPhone 4 or 3GS with an unofficial carrier unlock that depends on your device's baseband version, restore your device with custom firmware instead.)
  4. Select "Set up as new device" on the device itself during the setup process after the device is restored. Do not select "Set up as new iPhone" or "Restore from this backup" on iTunes yet.
  5. Open evasi0n on your computer and jailbreak your device. (Well, you'll have to wait for evasi0n to be released to do this step!)
  6. Open up Cydia for the first time to allow it to "prepare the filesystem". Wait for the respring to happen.
  7. Start iTunes again and select "Restore from this backup" to put your data back (apps, music, etc.).
  8. You're done. Feel free to open Cydia and install some packages. To access previously-purchased packages, tap "Manage Account" on the Cydia homepage and log in.

Thanks for comments, just to confirm my phone is locked to T-Mobile UK and I am using the genuine T-Mobile sim. If it requests to update the baseband at the restore stage this will be ok? Not even sure there is a new baseband but just wanted to check?

You're fine. It's not possible to preserve the baseband of an iPhone 4S while updating it, and you don't have to worry about that anyway since your phone is not unofficially unlocked.

If I have got apps on my device that have not been purchased from the appstore :-) on my current jailbroken 4s, after I restore to IOS 6.1 and run evasi0n will I need to download the apps again to work on version 6.1 jailbreak.

I'm not too concered about cydia apps as they are small and I can re download them.

Can I have my iphone 4s Version 5.1.1 updated to version 6.1 using my phone and not connect to a laptop?

No. You couldn't do it even with a supercomputer. And please use the "add a comment" button unless you are actually answering the original question. The button looks like this:
