How to fix some mysterious problems.

This is my first time jailbreaking anything, so please bear with me! I just updated iPod touch 4g to the iOS 6.1, and I think I updated it properly (through iTunes, not directly from my iPod touch). I think I backed it up properly, but how would I know for sure? And if I did do it properly, now what do I need to do?

It is either you restored properly or you didn't. If you can use your iPod now as you normally do, then you did it properly.

I don't think I restored anything. After I updated, my iPod turned back on normally and is working as normal, but do I need to actually restore it through iTunes (like hitting the restore button)?
